Abstract:
North Carolina's Jaycee Burn Center at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill is one of the foremost burn prevention and treatment programs in the world. It offers the National Fire Association's Learn Not to Burn Program. Ernest Grant, a nurse at the burn center, brought the program to Chapel Hill. The goal of the program is to keep people out of the burn center and reduce injuries. To assist in accomplishing this goal, the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction endorsed the use of the program as part of the fourth grade curriculum.

Many times surf fishermen wade out to make a cast that will reach fish in deep water. North Carolina Beach Buggy Association warns these casters to beware, and suggests they learn about rip currents and what to do if caught in one.

Durham police are trying to crackdown on celebratory gunfire. Around the Fourth of July and New Year’s, the city has seen an increase in the number of 911 calls due to the reported sound of gunshots. The police will start a campaign to educate citizens about the dangers of firing a gun into the air. Charts are included which show the total number of gunshots reported from March 25, 201 to March 25, 2011, the total reported daily for that time frame and the numbers reported on the Fourth of July and New Years holidays.

Among the crimes persistently challenging college campus safety is sexual assault. Researching efforts through corporations such as RTI International are producing data related to identifying factors and evaluating preventative measures. The collaborative effect of such data can hopefully help to reduced incidences of this common campus crime.
