In Sept. 1899, Will Sermons and two daughters of J. W. Smith, Superintendent of the County Home, were in a wagon being pulled by a mule. The mule suddenly ran away and one buggy wheel went through a ditch. Miss Nannie Smith was thrown out of the buggy and fell in the ditch. Her head caught between the spokes of the wheel, and when the mule pulled the wheel out of the ditch the young lady was pulled out by the neck. She survived the ordeal being badly bruised and skinned by the accident.
