The North Carolina Division of Environmental Management has set dates for public hearings on recommendations to designate ten coastal areas as “outstanding resource waters.” This classification is for surface waters having unique and special attributes together with excellent water quality.

Abstract:
The North Carolina Environmental Management Commission reached a compromise on a proposal to reclassify part of Alarka Creek in Swain County to “outstanding resource waters.” The Alarka Creek reclassification presented a unique case of natural resource management involving sole ownership of the entire drainage area, potential economic development, and the protection of valuable resources. The commission will reconsider rules prohibiting marina construction in certain coastal areas.

The North Carolina Environmental Commission voted to send to public hearing proposed special designations for water bodies across the state. Proposed watershed protection classifications include Outstanding Resource Waters (ORW), Shellfishing/Outstanding Resource Waters (SA-ORW), or High Quality Waters (HQW).
