Abstract:
The 1965 General Assembly determined it necessary for all vehicles in the state to pass an annual inspection. The assembly ruled that the Department of Motor Vehicles to administer the program and private shops to perform inspections. Inspections were required for operation on highways and must check six elements of safety; brakes, lights, horn, steering, wipers, and turn signals.

Mechanical fault can be a large factor in automobile accidents. Thus, the North Carolina State Motor Vehicle Commissioner is backing the Carolina Safety Leagues new, free Voluntary Vehicle Safety Check program. The campaign, now in progress across the state, aids motorists in putting their automobiles though mechanical safety inspections at no cost.

Pennsylvania and North Carolina are two of the 25 states with some form of mandatory periodic motor vehicle inspection. Inspectors are certified and and cover a lengthy check list provided by the state, paying special attention to danger spots like brakes, tires, steering mechanisms, exhaust, lights, mirrors, and horns.
