After serving the past fifty years as the company's top executive, John M. Belk, chairman and CEO of Belk, Inc., the nation's largest privately owned department store, will retire on May 26, 2004. Belk is the son of William Henry Belk, who founded the company in Monroe in 1888. Belk, Inc. operates 225 stores in fourteen Southeastern and mid-Atlantic states.

We the People of North Carolina magazine features John M. Belk of Belk Stores Services, Inc. in the Businessman in the News section. He is the son of William Henry Belk, the company's founder. The North Carolina Citizens Association presented its Citation for Distinguished Citizenship to John Belk at its annual meeting. Belk was mayor of Charlotte from 1969 to 1977 and serves as CEO of Belk Stores Services, Inc. and as president of Belk Brothers Company in Charlotte.
