Abstract:
The most desirable neighborhood for North Carolina fish may be a community founded on old tires, scrap concrete, and sunken ships. Artificial reefs are now being used by NC Division of Marine Fisheries to improve the habitat of coastal waters that can support more fish.

Abstract:
On August 1, the USS Yancey became the largest ship ever used for an artificial reef in North Carolina’s waters. The ship should attract bait fish and larger game fish outside of Beaufort Inlet.

Artificial reefs, like the one built at Wrightsville Beach, improve fishing grounds by offering food and shelter sources. Among the details were factors for creating an artificial reef, prior attempts at constructing artificial reefs, data indicating a positive impact for South Carolina’s artificial reefs, and the Artificial Reef Program’s future sites along NC coastal waterways.
