Since then the company has earned a reputation for blankets, upholstery material, apparel cloth, and yarns used in other textile plants. Alexander Chatham founded the Chatham Manufacturing Company in Elkin in Surry County in 1877. Since then the company has earned a reputation for blankets, upholstery material, apparel cloth, and yarns used in other textile plants. In 1969, the company entered into a joint venture with Scott paper Company to develop a manmade leather substitute.
