The Chatham Manufacturing Company was founded in Elkin in Surry County in 1877. Since then the company has earned a reputation for blankets, upholstery material, apparel cloth, and yarns used in other textile plants. Chatham employs around 3,500; many have fathers and grandfathers who worked for the company.
