The New Bern Academy Museum opened December 10, 1990, and is the fourth component of the Tryon Palace Restoration Complex. Founded in 1764, the academy was one of the country's earliest secondary schools.

The old New Bern Academy has had a long history since it was built in 1809, enduring the Civil War and becoming part of the public school system in 1971. But thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers, the New Bern Academy has new life as it reopens as a museum.

Abstract:
The New Bern Academy is one of the few remaining Federal-style public buildings in North Carolina, and the first school in the state to have been established by law. Founded in 1764, it ranks as one of the oldest secondary schools in the nation. The building became a museum in 1990 and exhibits the history of New Bern.
