The North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry presented its 1992 Citation for Distinguished Citizenship to Ralph Ketner of Salisbury for his work as an outstanding entrepreneur, philanthropist and civic volunteer. A small-town grocer, Ketner founded Food Lion.
In 1967 Ralph Ketner's supermarket chain of sixteen stores had dropped to seven and his profits totaled only $36,000. He was not certain he would be in business the following year. Yet he did not go under. Now, in 1990, at age 70, he is retiring as chairman of the board of the country's fastest-growing supermarket chain - Food Lion, which had sales of $4.7 billion in 1989.
