William Rand Kenan Jr. was driven to compete with other higher education institutions in the North and North Carolina, as well as the efforts of his philanthropic rival, John Motley Morehead III.

The Atlantic Coast Conference, founded in 1953, generates high profile college basketball programs. However, the ACC was initially established as a football conference, with some southern teams looking to create a more football centered league outside of the Southern Conference. Yet since its inception members of the league have been charged with violating NCAA rules. For the current season, U.N.C. is on probation for academic fraud.

Jerry McGee is president of Wingate College. He is also a top field official during the Atlantic Coast Conference's football season. McGee began officiating in 1973 and has worked over four hundred games. Among them are two national championship games--the 1990 Orange Bowl and the 1997 Rose Bowl--and eighteen bowl games overall.
