Abstract:
North Carolina is the home of several \"water witches,\" whose power in locating wells and underground streams is mysterious. Both men and women have been known to possess this ability, although no one has ever been able to explain it. It is believed that the term \"water witch\" is derived from \"water withe,\" referring to the withe, or switch which the seeker after water holds in their hands.
