Bruce Bridgers is the owner of The Know Bookstore and Restaurant in Durham. In operation for over seventeen years, it is currently the oldest active Afro-American-owned bookstore in the state. Bridgers has had struggles to remain open, especially with competition from large stores, like Barnes & Noble, and on-line giant Amazon.com.

Because of abuse, abandonment, and neglect, 11,000 North Carolina children have been placed in out-of-home care. About 27 percent of these children are African-American, and on average they are in the system longer than white children. Jackson discusses the reasons for this and solutions to the problem.

Opposition to a possible lottery bill in the 1999 General Assembly brings together an unlikely alliance of Groups. The N.C. Budget and Tax Center and N.C. Council of Churches are joining forces with the conservative Family Policy Council and John Locke Foundation to fight the bill.

In 1910, the U.S. Department of Agriculture listed nearly one million black farmers, who owned 15 million acres, about 14 percent of the nation's farmland. Today black farmers number 18,000 nationwide and collectively own less than 1 percent of all farms. North Carolina has been especially hard hit, losing between 1982 and 1992, more black farms than any other state in the union. Jackson discusses reasons for this decline.

However, over the past year many, including parents, teachers, students, school officials, and psychologists, are raising concerns about so much testing. Jackson discusses this dissension over the state's testing policies.
