Sergeant of the army giving out rations
Description
Martin County farmer John Conrad Getsinger, Sr., a native of Wurttemburg, Germany, participated as a sergeant in Company E of the 1st Regiment of N.C. Volunteers during the Mexican War (1847-1848). This partially colored sketch of a uniformed soldier receiving a plate and cup from two uniformed men is from his sketchbook made during his stay in Mexico. The caption reads "A sergeant of the soldiers army giving out rations."
