MEMORANDUM Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599-3240
TO: All Concerned

FROM: Scott J. Parker
Director

SUBJECT: 1994 Mark R. Sumner Award

DATE: June 1, 1994

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Outdoor Drama, it is my
pleasure to invite you to submit nominations for the 1994 Mark R. Sumner Award.

The Sumner Award was established in 1990 to honor the lifetime contribution of
the Institute's director emeritus and recognizes the significant contribution of an
individual to a specific drama or to the outdoor historical drama movement as a
whole, in areas including, but not limited to, playwriting, choreography, direction,
dance, acting, design, theatre architecture, patronage, scholarship, musical
composition, technology and innovation, production and administration. The
Sumner Award exemplifies the highest standards of American outdoor drama and
is the only national award to do so.

The first Sumner Award was presented in 1991 to Bert Ballard, general manager of
Th hen Foster Story in Bardstown, KY. In 1992, Raymond Raillard, vice :
president of "TEXAS" in Canyon, TX received the award. Kermit Hunter,
playwright of 43 outdoor historical dramas, was the recipient in 1993. The 1994
Sumner Award will be presented on Saturday evening, October 29, at the National
Conference on Outdoor Drama in Eureka Springs, AR.

The nomination and selection process are administered by the Board of Directors of
the Institute of Outdoor Drama, which is a nine-member body at the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Board will reach a decision by mid-September at
which time all nominators will be notified regarding their nominations. In the past
it has been possible to present the award at the National Conference without
notifying the recipients beforehand because they were expected to attend the
conference in any event. Only the nominator was aware of the impending
presentation. If circumstances permit for 1994, we will operate in a similar manner,

however, if the individual selected to receive the award is not expected to attend the
conference as a matter of course, we will, with the cooperation of the nominator,
notify the recipient in mid-September in the hopes that he or she will be able to
make plans to attend the conference in Eureka Springs. Unfortunately, the Institute
does not have funds available to support the travel of the recipient to the
conference.

More than one nomination may be submitted by an individual or organization.
Each nomination must be accompanied by a separate nomination form, a copy of
which is attached and may be reproduced as necessary. All nomination forms must
be typed to facilitate reading and duplication.

The Institute encourages the submission of support materials for each nominee,
which may include letters of recommendation, copies of newspaper clippings,
video/audio tapes, and other information which will be helpful to the IOD Board.

Nominations must be postmarked no later than Monday, August 22, 1994. Renewal
of a previous nomination may not require submission of the 1994 application form
and support materials. Please contact the Institute office for advice.

Nominations should be sent to:
