This is almost certainly a group learning a routine for majorette try-outs. The band never had that many majorettes as part of the band. (my memory is a little fuzzy, but a check of yearbooks from that time will show a maximum of about 12) During my 4 years in the band, 1957 - 1961 we had a drum major, as well. In '57, it was Bob Ellwanger, a tuba major who went on to teach high school band in Virginia. I taught in the same geographical area. From '58 through '61 Jim (Scooby) Burns was the drum major. He was a trumpet major and played lead trumpet in the Collegians, and jazz oriented dance band. At home coming, even now, the Collegian alumni get together and perform.

Appears to be the east end of campus, at the ECC College Stadium where today Speight, Fletcher, Brewster, and the new Croatan stand. The dirt road leads to 5th Street.
