Black and white group photograph of the 338th Infantry Medical Detachment at Camp Custer, Michigan. Lieutenant Malthus R. Freeman was part of this detachment and is shown in the photograph. Freeman took a temporary leave from his medical practice in Bailey, North Carolina, to serve in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War I. He enlisted on 9 September 1917 and served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Medical Detachment of 338th Infantry, 85th Division, and was discharged 21 June 1919.
