SPRING AND GRADUATION come rolling around the corner, and another Tecoan is "put to bed" to record a full year of East Carolina Teachers College. The pleasant part about the finish of such a large project lies in the fact that the editorial and business staffs can forget most of the work and relive the fun of companionship for years to come.

The typewriters have slowed down in the Tecoan staff room, but they haven't stopped, for even before the 1950 edition is complete a new crop of workers has begun on the 1951 book. My hope for the new staff is that they may have as excellent cooperation from the administration, faculty and student body as we have experienced, to aid them in production.

The long hours of work have not made it an easy year for the staff but our experience has been on a worthwhile plane. I have personally enjoyed the companionship of the staff members and consider it an honor to have worked with them. The physical and cultural progress of the college often causes me to feel that I was born at least five years too soon. I hope that the Tecoan will always maintain the tradition of pushing ahead.

...to DR. BEECHER FLANAGAN

we Dedicate tke 1950 Tecoan

who has served during this year as advisor to the Senior Class and the Y. M. C. A.

During the twenty-five years that Dr. Flanagan has been an instructor at East Carolina, he has been advisor, counselor, and friend to many of the organizations now on out campus. He has served as sponsor of the Phi Sigma Pi since it was organized in 1936. Dr. Flanagan has also been an advisor to the Tecoan, the Teco Echo, Pieces O' Eight, Budget Committee, and the Men's Athletic Association.

If we were asked the definition of the word "friend," we would say the student body has a good friend in the person of Dr. Flanagan.

Dear Students,

Our college is made richer because of your coming. Within you lie great possibilities. You are among the fortunate few who have the opportunity to attend college. The value of this will depend upon you. Our world will be made better or worse through your activities. Everyone has some influence. How this is used is the important thing.

Strive to succeed in your chosen life's work, but be sure that you exemplify the Golden Rule in all of your activities. There is great need for leadership to bring peace out of chaos and joy out of sorrow. You should help to provide that function. We are expecting much from you.

Fraternally yours,

J.D. Messick

Graduate Work At East Carolina

On August 22, 1929, East Carolina Teachers College was authorized to grant the Master of Arts degree. The first candidate received the degree four years later. From 1933 through August, 1949, one hundred fifty-five candidates were granted the Master of Arts degree. The largest number in any one year, fifty-five, were granted during the academic year 1948-1949, including the 1949 summer session. There are currently more than two hundred candidates for the degree.

All graduate students at East Carolina who are studying for the Master's degree major in some phase of professional education; elementary education, secondary education, or educational administration and supervision. Students may specialize also in guidance and special education.

Secondary education majors must and administration and supervision majors may minor in one academic field. Such students will normally meet the academic requirements graduate certificates in both the major and minor fields by the time they have completed the requirements for the Master's degree.

Minor fields leading to graduate teaching certificates are offered at East Carolina as follows: business education, English, geography, health and physical education, history, library science, mathematics, science, and social studies. The academic requirements for the superintendent's cerfificates may be met by taking extensive work in the field of educational administration.

FOOTBALL

The opening game of 1949 found our Pirates with a NEW coach, NEW stadium, and after the final whistle, a NEW thrill - East Carolina 24, Cherry Point Marines 0. The Dolemen played inspired ball to give East Carolina its first football victory in two years. Roger Thrift, later chosen All-Conference quarterback, passed brilliantly for the Pirates, hitting Doug Bryant and Dwight Shoe with touchdown passes. Johnny Smith handled the ground game in fine style as he jaunted in to the end zone twice.

Lenoir-Rhyne was the first Conference foe of the Pirates and was rated a four touchdown favorite to win and a sure place high in the final Conference standings. A hard fought battle thrilled 4,000 people as the Pirates lost a heartbreaking 21-20 encounter. Thrift's touchdown passes to Shoe, Tanner and Kovoch with two conversions by Danks accounted for the Pirate scoring.

Traveling to Hampden-Sydney the Pirates lost 20-7 to the more experienced opponent, but in so doing they gained valuable experience that Coach Dole wanted them to know. Thrift's pass to Bryant tallied the only Pirate touchdown and Jim Danks converted. Mac Lewis, 160-pound guard, was the outstanding lineman until he was forced out of the game with a broken nose. Reggie Byrd, guard, also played well in the line.

Homecoming Day the Dolemen lost 33-7 to a big, fast Elon team, operated behind a 216 pound line. The Pirates took on early 7-0 lead as Jack Benzie, playing his first Conference game, set a record by returning a punt 65 yards the first time he handled the ball and on the next play caught a 14-yard Thrift pass in the end zone. Danks converted. Elon's heavy line and experienced reserves proved too much for the Pirates.

WCTC, winners of the Conference, chalked up a 19-6 victory over the Pirates at Canton and once again the Pirates drew high praise for the battle they gave the four touchdown favorites. Bill Darby sparked the Pirates as he raced 14 yards for the score. Darby's 70-yard kickoff return was nullified by a penalty. Reggie Byrd and Jack Melvin played fine defensive ball.

Playing at the Apprentice School the Pirates emerged victorious 26-21 in a game that saw the lead change hands five times. The never-say-die Pirates fought back and wrapped up the game on Bill Darby's 20-yard touchdown run. Frank Maennle gove the Pirates a 6-0 lead in the second quarter as he plunged over from the five. The half and the game both ended with the Pirates on the Apprentice one foot line. Roger Thrift again accounted for two Pirate touchdowns as he passed to Benzie and Tanner for the scores. Jim Danks converted twice.

Returning home, the Pirates unleashed a smashing attack and stone wall defense to rout Edenton Flyers 67-0. A driving rain in the second half led to force fans from the stands as they sat in awed amazement, not at the Pirates' scoring punch but by the block busting tackles and blocks exhibited by the Pirate offensive and defensive linemen and linebackers. Billy Smith and Mike Kovach scored twice and Benzie, Shoe, Tanner and Grady once. Grady's 60-yard punt return was the longest scoring play, made possible by brilliant blocking of Doc Smith. Thrift passed for two touchdowns and Sandy Siler for one. Jim Danks converted 7 times.

Appalachian, defending Conference champions, beat the Pirates 35-18, in a game which saw the Pirates come from a 21-0 deficit to a 21-12 half time score. The Doleman played the Apps on equal footing and matched them touchdown for touchdown until the final minute of play when the Apps scored again. Once again the Pirates drew high praise in defeat.

Playing at High Point, the Pirates scored in the last five seconds of play on a pass from Thrift to Tanner to gain a 26-26 tie. Jim Danks' conversion attempt was ruled no good and the decision was disputed by the Pirates and booed by the High Point fans. Jack Benzie hit pay dirt twice for the Pirates and Darby and Tanner scored once. Thrift again threw two touchdown passes, one to Benzie and one to Tanner.

The final game of the year the Pirates retained the Bohunk Trophy by beating our traditional rival, ACC, 6-2. Coach Dole amazed staunch Pirate supporters by keeping the Pirate famous passing attack completely under wraps. Using Frank Maennle as the big weapon, the Pirates played a ground game that saw Maennle pick up 141 yards. Trailing 2-0, Maennle crossed the goal line in the third quarter for the victory. Numerous Pirate drives were stopped as the Pirates fumbled six times.

Thus our season ended with a record of four wins, five losses and one tie. Our Conference record was one win, four defeats and one tie. Coach Dole and our squad have made the school very proud of them by overcoming the inexperience they had and displaying a fine brand of football against more experienced and powerful teams. The fine spirit and determination of the 1949 Pirates will long be remembered and will serve as on inspiration to wearers of the purple and gold in the future.

BASKETBALL

East Carolina's cagers began the 1949-50 basketball season with 6 wins against 2 defeats, and 4 straight conference victories without a defeat to gain first place in the North State circuit.

Opening the season with Wilson T.C., the Pirates were winners, 60-58. Jack Everton and Lou Collie, All-North State tournament members last year, led the Bucs with 17 and 13 points respectively. Apprentice School was next and bowed to the locals, 56-53, with Freshman Sonny Russell and Len Bauer leading the way. Minus Guard Len Bauer, the Buccaneers lost in their third outing, in a thriller with Camp Lejeune, 61-57. Russell and Toddy Fennell were high scorers with 14 and 12 points each.

Guilford, first conference for of the Bucs, fell before on pressive Pirate five, 58-42, as Collie tossed in 16 point pace the victory.

In two return games with Wilson T.C. and Camp Lejeune, the Pirates won handily over the Teachers, 63-46, as Russell's 20 points and Fennell's 15 paced the victors. The Marines handed the purple and gold a second loss, as they won on a last second basket, 43-41. Everton aided the Buccaneer cause with 15 points.

Highly-rated Catawba was downed in the Bucs' second league victory, 52-43, as Russell hit the hoops with 17 points, followed by Fennell who gathered in eleven.

Powerful Appalachian was the third victim of the Pirates in conference play, as the locals sailed back from a 20-19 halftime deficit, to outscore the Apps in a hard-fought battle, 42-41. Combining 14 points each, Everton and Russell again

set the pace for the up and coming East Carolina quint. Len Bauer proved to be the outstanding floorman of the tilt.

With the holidays behind them, the Pirates sharpened their scoring attack, and continued their onslaught on North State foes, by overpowering a lowly Elon quint, 56-44, for their fourth consecutive circuit win. Everton poured in 22 points and Collie hit for 12 to pace the Pirate scorers.

Coach Howard Porter, with his team leading the league, was particularly pleased on his quint's fine road record. Having already won three road games compared with last year's one. Porter emphasized the fact that all teams would eventually hit their stride and the rest of the Pirate slate would be tougher contests.

Looking forward to the remainder of the season, we are proud of our gallant cagers of the court. Win or lose, we shall give them our all. Coach Porter and his entire squad deserve high praises for what they have already accomplished.

BOXING

The 1949-50 boxing team, coached by the former contender for the welterweight championship of the world Johnny Long, opened their season by entering the Clinton Golden Gloves. Led by Captain Bill Hunter, the Pirate pugilists brought 5 of 8 trophies back to East Carolina in addition to the team trophy. Winners for the Pirates included Bill Hunter, Ken Stargardt, Crowell Williamson, H. A. Creef, Charlie Edwards, Cecil Phillips, and Bill Cole. Tournament officials said, "East Carolina was the best conditioned and coached team in the tournament."

Invading the University of South Carolina, Southern Conference Champions, East Carolina made an impressive showing in losing the match 6 1/2-3 1/2 with several unpopular decisions being awarded the champions. Bill Hunter, heavyweight, Bill Torrans, light heavyweight, and Cecil Phillips, welterweight, won their matches. Ken Stargardt, senior welterweight, drew with his opponent. It was Stargardt's first draw in 10 college bouts in two years, making his record 8 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw.

TENNIS

The 1949 Tennis squad emerged victorious in two Conference matches as they downed Elon 4-3 and Lenoir-Rhyne 7-2. A young inexperienced squad gave good accounts of themselves even in defeats as they showed the makings of a good squad that needed only experience. Charlie Bill Moye and Ben Harrison, our sensational doubles team, carried the purple and gold colors into the final round of the North State Conference Tournament before being defeated in a close match.

SADIE HAWKINS DAY

Outstanding among the big occasions at East Carolina this year was Sadie Hawkins Day. Sponsored annually by the Science Club, the big event was staged on campus this year with a real race to the finish. Mayor Stafford of Greenville fired the shot that sent those gals after the helpless bachelors this year. In the evening a dance with all Dogpatchers out in their Sunday best featured the close of the event.

OF THE YEAR...

REGISTRATION-HOMECOMING-CARNIVAL

From registration to Homecoming - all through the year, East Carolina is a busy place. With the largest enrollment in history, men again outnumbered the women this year.

Yes, our campus is an active place all the way from the tables at registration to the crowds that come back for Homecoming.

Under the capable leadership of Raz Autry of Dunn, N. C., the Student Government Association has been very active throughout the year. The tasks facing the Association have been many, and often it was hard to please everyone, but as always, things worked out for the best.

Having more students has meant more clubs and activities and with these came more spending. The largest job accomplished by the 1949-50 Legislature was the appropriation of funds. Everyone can look back and say that the Legislature carried out its duties to the last letter.

This is your 1950 Tecoan. Many changes have been made this year as the staff members have worked to produce a larger and better yearbook. For the first time in the history of the college, the annual contains a student directory. As East Carolina grows into a larger and better college, your yearbook should also grow. We hope that our steps of progress this year are up with the progress of a great college.

THE STAFF AT WORK

It has been our purpose to present, within these pages, as many students and activities in as many varied forms as possible. Such a policy gives to each student fairer representation and therefore greater interest. In this connection it has been our pleasure to include as many individual potraits as possible.

An undertaking of this kind requires the help and cooperation of many people. Credit should be given to a very efficient staff whose job is thankless for which no praise is too great. We have finished our job. The 1950 Teeoon is yours. May it long bring back endearing memories of your college days.

The Teco Echo became a weekly this year after twenty-three years of service as a bi-weekly newspaper. During the year it has become established as the voice of the students and an outlet of expression to lovers of journalism. Staff members look back on two first ratings awarded the paper last year and anticipate even greater success as their publication enters its twenty-fifth year.

Jerney Minshew

Business Manager

104

STAFF MEMBERS

The purpose of the Teco Echo in this, its 24th year, has been an effort to present in readable form a kaleidoscopic view of College life, to accurately reflect news events of the campus on the front page, and to interpret that news in the editorial columns.

The front and sports pages have attempted to present the campus with a day-by-day account of campus life in a campus tone, recording meetings of student groups that were of a collective interest, playing up individual incidents that were significant in the campus stream of change, and always searching for human interest that would color the more routine happenings.

The Air R. O. T. C. Unit in 1949-50 completed its second year of service and grew in prestige as one of the outstanding departments on the campus. Three officers and three airmen are assigned to the unit, and since its opening at the beginning of the college academic year in September, 1948, it has been under the capable leadership of Lt. Col. William D. Brown, Professor of Air Science and Tactics. The mission of the Air R. O. T. C. program is to produce junior officers who have qualities and attributes essential to their progressive and continued development as officers in the U. S. Air Force Reserve. This unit takes every opportunity to participate in college activities and is becoming an integral part of campus life. It has a Cadet Club and Rifle Team. Parades and ceremonies are held at appropriate times. The Annual Military Ball was the major highlight among its social activities for the year, though it participated in city parades and other civic events.

Hilton Styron, a Business Education major is good not only in Accounting and Business Law, but scored highest with the rifle on the Banana River range in Florida this past summer. Styron, a senior at East Carolina and a member of the second advance class of the AROTC, set the pace at a tremendous score of 192 points out of a possible 200. Styron also had a record of 32 out of 40 bull's-eyes.

Hilton Styron

Throughout most of the past year the members of the AROTC have been active in their scholastic work. As you know, "All work and no ploy makes Jack a dull boy," so the cooperative members of the various dance committees performed their duties to the best of their abilities and have helped to make the ball live long in the hearts of all.

Through the archway marched the cadet officers and their guests to the music played by our college orchestra. This was one of the many happy occasions the cadets have had since being together at East Carolina.

Lt. and Mrs. William F. Waters

A glance to your left and you will see a handsome Cadet with his beautiful coed. The lovely flowers and streamers surrounding the archway are a reminder of the pleasing atmosphere which everyone enjoyed at the Military Ball.

COLLEGE BAND

The East Carolina Band, under the direction of Herbert Carter, continues to grow each year. The half-time shows at the football games this year were the best yet. The cap-lights donated by the students were an added attraction to the night maneuvers on the gridiron. All of the varied concerts and assembly programs have been highly enjoyed by everyone.

THE COLLEGE CHOIR

The College Choir, directed by Dr. Karl V. Gilbert, is to many students one of their favorite classes. For years to come the choir will continue to provide enjoyment for students and others.

BOB LEE AND HIS ORCHESTRA

"The Best Band in Tar-Heel Land" - That is the slogan of Bob Lee and his orchestra, and the students believe every word of it is true. Formerly called The Collegians, this band was organized in 1946 on a cooperative basis, and has continued successfully ever since.

WOMEN'S CHORUS

The Women's Chorus, popularly called the Glee Club, is made up of students from all departments on the campus. Their cheerful voices have been bringing gay and serious music to college programs and functions for years. The Chorus is directed by Mr. Dan E. Vornholt and Miss Alison Hearne is the Accompanist.
