Bed Key
Date:
|
Identifier: Historic Hope Plantation
The bed key is a wooden tool to tighten ropes on bedsteads. In the 1800s, whole families often shared beds, especially in the wintertime. This stretched out the ropes that supported the mattresses. Tightening ropes was a weekly task. We still use the phrase "sleep tight," which comes from this practice. How would your nightly routine differ if you had to take time to tighten your bed? date: 1800-1825 $http://digital.lib.ecu.edu/historyfiction/artifact.aspx?id=hbl more...
