Description: Letter from Robert C. Caldwell to his wife Mag Caldwell. Robert is serving as a private in Company C., 10th Battalion, North Carolina Heavy Artillery and writes from Fort Caswell in Brunswick County. Robert writes that he is in good health but that there is smallpox in his company. He has been on guard duty with no sleep for 3 nights. Robert asks Mag for news of his mother's health, and tells her to get Dr. Houston to write a letter describing his mother's condition. He says a letter from the doctor may get him a special furlough to come home.
