Description: Writing with dip pens frequently left more ink on a sheet than the paper could absorb. Writers sprinkled fine sand on top of a page to absorb the extra ink without smearing it. The sand could then be swept off the paper and back into the sander to be used again. Date approximated. The accompanying video describes the object.
