Description: Originally owned by Dr. Henderson Irwin of Eureka, North Carolina, this 19th century buggy features a seat for one and large, thin wheels that would travel through rutted country routes. As part of the museum's artifacts relating to transportation, this artifact illustrates one of the main methods of transportation for country doctors before the automobile. Video Transcription: Country doctors often used a buggy such as this one to make house calls on patients in their community. A good part of the Country Doctor’s day and evening was spent traveling to visit patients. These buggies were light, sturdy, and built high off the ground so a horse can pull it with relative ease over all kinds of terrain. This particular buggy was use by Dr. Henderson Irwin and his horse Red Devil of Eureka, North Carolina in the early 1900’s.
