    Abstract: Records (May 1940-November 1945) include mainly correspondence between Thomas William Linder of Raleigh, North Carolina, and his girlfriend (later wife) Evelyn Doris Hill of Cayce, South Carolina. Mr. Linder worked for the railroad and later in life was an engineer with Amtrak. The letters from April 1942 through August 1945 document his service in the U.S. Army with the 816th Engineer Aviation Battalion during World War II. He was promoted to corporal in September 1942. Other items include two photographs, holiday cards, a pay stub and a poem.

  • Biographical / Historical Note
     

    Corporal Thomas William Linder of Cayce, South Carolina, and later Raleigh, North Carolina, wrote to his fiancee Evelyn Doris Hill of Cayce, later his wife, during his World War II service (April 1942-August 1945) in Europe. He was serving in the U.S. Army with the 816th Engineer Aviation Battalion. His letters also cover his training period at Fort Bragg and Fort Belvoir and his wait to be shipped out from Langley Field in Virginia. After the war, Linder worked for the railroad and eventually was an engineer with Amtrak.
