    The Charles S. Sterrett Collection contains one print of the USS Wisconsin (BB-64). While Sterrett was working at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, all of the employees, including himself, received this print of the USS Wisconsin in honor of the ship being completed (1945).

  • Biographical / Historical Note
     

    Charles S. Sterrett was born in Abington, Pennsylvania (January 12, 1924), and joined the United States Navy Reserves at the age of 20 (1944). During his two years of service, he earned the rank of an MMS2. Significant duty stations at which he served are in Gamadodo, New Guinea, USS PONTUS AGP-20, NTS Dearborn, MI, NTC Bainbridge, MD and on the Philadelphia Navy Yard. He earned two significant awards which were the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with a star and a World War II Victory Medal.

    The USS Wisconsin is the second ship that was built for the United States Navy that was named in honor of the state of Wisconsin. She is an Iowa class of battleships; her keel was laid down on 25 January 1941, at the Philadelphia Navy Yard; she was launched on 7 December 1943; and commissioned on 16 April 1944. During its 14 years of active service, the ship served in both World War II and the Korean War, earned 6 battle stars, and now resides at the naval base in Norfolk, Virginia, as a museum.
