McGlohon's career as a musical composer, arranger, orchestra leader and performer of jazz, popular and sacred music. Many items also relate to McGlohon's personal life such as photographs, reel to reel tapes of family events, passports, deeds, wills, death and birth certificates, military discharge papers and correspondence with well-known musicians, actors and political figures.

  • Biographical / Historical Note
     

    Loonis McGlohon was born September 29, 1921, in Ayden, N.C., to Max Cromwell McGlohon and Bertha Andrews McGlohon and died January 26, 2002, at his home in Charlotte, N.C. A graduate of East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., he worked for Jefferson-Pilot Broadcasting for a number of years and was widely known as a pianist and composer. He performed across the U.S. and in many other countries, and collaborated with reporter Charles Kuralt on a tribute in words and music to North Carolina titled "North Carolina Is My Home." He also collaborated with composer Alec Wilder and his songs were performed by such well-known artists as Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, Eileen Farrell, Judy Garland and Margaret Whiting. He was married to Nan Lovelace and they had children L. Reeves McGlohon, Fan McGlohon Smith and Laurie McGlohon Shouse.

    April 15, 2011(unprocessed addition 3), 14 boxes, 6.0 cubic feet; Papers (1921-2002), including 14 scrapbooks (1942-2000); McGlohon’s musical scores, scripts and programs for church cantatas, an opera, musical productions (1957-1959) done by the Jaycee Jollies (Charlotte, N.C.), the Final Four production (1994) and The Hornets’ Nest (1968); an autographed copy of Making a Difference in North Carolina (1988); diplomas; 18 master broadcast videocassettes and 4 reel to reel tapes of North Carolina Is My Home; 14 audiocassettes of American Popular Song with Alec Wilder and Friends; 10 reel to reel tapes of productions and family-related (1956-1965) events; legal papers including passports, deeds, wills, death and birth certificates and military discharge papers; and correspondence (1954-2001) mostly from well-known musicians, actors and political figures.     August 24, 2015(unprocessed addition 4), 8 boxes, 8.0 cubic feet; This addition consists of audio recordings done by Loonis R. McGlohon at Reflections Studio in Charlotte, North Carolina. The recordings are of songs written by McGlohon and performed by vocalists such as Eileen Farrell, Julius LaRosa, Maxine Sullivan, Marlene Ver Planck, and David Allyn accompanied by McGlohon and his trio. Other performances are by the Carmel Church Choir, the Loonis McGlohon Trio, and McGlohon playing solo piano. Also included is the recording of Wizard of Oz music used at the Land of Oz theme park in the North Carolina mountains. The material is housed in 12” x 12” x 2” cases (14), 12” x 12” x 3” cases (21) and 12” x 12” x 4” cases (4). Donor: L. Reeves McGlohon.
