This collection consists primarily of land records (1761-1877) of the Boyd family pertaining to land on both sides of the Tar River in Pitt County and lots in the city of Greenville. Included also are land grants and deeds for land on the Pamlico River in Beaufort County.
Other legal records in the collection consist of a will for Walter Dixon of Pitt County (1767), estates papers for the estate of John Boyd (1859), a deed for the sale of a slave (1812), and miscellaneous tax records and court related documents.
Of particular significance are school circulars for Trinity School at Chocowinity, N.C. (1886-1887) and Warrenton Female Collegiate Institute at Warrenton, N.C. (1859). Details of each school's curriculum, organization, faculty and tuition are included. Student reports, texts and expenses are included for Warrenton Female Collegiate Institute.
Miscellaneous items include an auction notice (1859) for John Boyd's Plantation on Chicod Creek; an advertisement (1869) for the Washington, N.C. grocery firm of Telfair & Carmen, and invitation (1856) to a party at Oxford Male Academy; and advertisements (1861) for a ball at Macon Hall in Greenville.
