Papers (1941-1970) of member of U. S. Naval Academy Class of 1941, including correspondence, orders, citations, an informal log of his naval service, 1941-1947, a photographs, and miscellany relating to his service aboard the destroyers USS LEA and the USS WADSWORTH during World War II and his postwar naval career.
This collection consists of two chromolithographs produced by the Navy Records Society in 1901 depicting naval engagements of the Third Anglo Dutch War (March 27, 1672 to February 19, 1674). The prints illustrate the Battle of Solebay (May 28, 1672) and the Battle of Texel (August 21, 1673). The Battle of Solebay chromolithograph is divided into three sections, each titled to represent successive phases of the engagement and containing extensive printed inscriptions. The Battle of Texel chromolithograph is divided into seven sections, each bearing printed titles that mark specific times and stages of the battle and accompanied by printed inscriptions.

Green (1945-1984 [Bulk: 1984]) documenting the life and literary career of the Haywood County, North Carolina-born, journalist at the Asheville, novelist, newspaper publisher, and educator; consisting of manuscript materials relating to his novel The Silence of the Snakes (1984) which, like many of Green's stories concerned mountain people and was set in the 1930s; a biographical sketch of Green; and sheet music for the song David (Frances Frost) (1945).
Edith D. Warren Papers
#1385This collection (1937-2015) is related to Edith Doughtie Warren's personal life and to her time as the representative for the 8th District (composed of Martin County and part of Pitt County) in the North Carolina House of Representatives (January 1, 1999-January 1, 2013). Included are six binders related to her political career containing correspondence, photographs, speeches, committee material, clippings, campaign ephemera, and also materials related to the "Fried Chicken Caucuses" held 2001 to 2007. Five more binders document Edith Warren's long career as an educator and her family history, particularly concerning the Doughtie Family of Bethel and Mayo's Crossroads areas of Pitt and Edgecombe Counties. Also represented are photographs and documents concerning her husband Billy N. Warren's family, and Billy and Edith Warren's family together.

Alex L. Manly Papers
#0065Papers (1898-1903, 1953-1984, undated) including photographs, clippings, biographical sketch, and photocopy of pages from "A Documentary History of The Negro People in the United States" concerning Alex L. Manly (1866-1944), African-American newspaper editor of The Daily Record in Wilmington, North Carolina, during the Wilmington massacre of 1898. Additional materials include typed transcriptions of nine letters (November 19, 1953-November 9, 1955) written by Caroline "Carrie" Sadgwar Manly (widow of Alex L. Manly) to her sons Milo A. Manly and Lewin R. Manly. The transcriptions were done by Milo A. Manly (1903-1991) and given by him to the donor, Professor Charles Hardy III. Also included is a photocopy of the transcription of an interview done with Milo A. Manly by the donor on September 11, 1984. The original interview is held at Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History at the University of Kentucky.
This collection (ca. 1909-2002) contains documents related to the career of David Jordan Whichard II of Greenville, N.C., longtime editor of The Daily Reflector and president and chief executive officer of the newspaper's publishing firm. Whichard also served on many professional boards such as the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association, the N.C. Press Association, the Associated Press Board of Directors, the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees, the ECU Board of Trustees, the UNC System Board of Governors, and on the board for Wachovia Corporation. All of these activities plus other business-related and civic-related activities are reflected in the correspondence, minutes, reports, publications, financial records, and clippings in this collection.
