Oral history interviews conducted with people connected with the health sciences, mainly in North Carolina. They include audiocassettes, videocassettes, CDs, DVDs, and transcripts.
This collection contains two artifacts excavated at the Cape Creek site (Croatan), Buxton, Dare County, North Carolina, in 1998 during the Croatan Archaeological Project, East Carolina University Professor Emeritus David Sutton Phelps, Director. The artifacts are a signet ring engraved with a "lion passant," prancing lion, crest (Specimen Acc. No. 1283-1297) with dimensions: 0.75" (l) x 0.5" (w) x 0.25" (d) and weight: 0.25 oz.; and a musket firing lock (Specimen Acc. No. 1283-1976). Research results indicate they are probably of early 17th century origin, but late 16th century origin can't be definitively ruled out.
Papers of Paul Green (1985) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Lillington, North Carolina-born American novelist and playwright whose works focus on North Carolina folklore and themes, consisting of incomplete sample proof pages of the first few pages of his dictionary of Cape Fear language and slang, entitled Cape Fear Valley People: A – B, covers, p. 1,4-6, by Paul Green; edited by Rhoda H. Wynn (1985) and transmittal note (16 March 1985) from Heritage Printers, Inc., Charlotte, NC, relating to possible publication; the text later appears in Paul Green's Wordbook: An Alphabet of Reminiscence, by Paul Green; edited by Rhoda H. Papers of Hilary Masters (1984-1987) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-born American novelist, short-story writer, memoirist, and educator at Carnegie-Mellon University, consisting of manuscripts and proofs of his novels and short story collections entitled (1986-1987), Buster's Head (1985), and Hammertown Tales (1986); also loose items transferred from his works in the Stuart Wright Book Collection (1985-1987); and oversized materials related to Hammertown Tales (1984, 1986).
Papers of Walter Sullivan (1987-1989) documenting the life and career of the Nashville, Tennessee-born American novelist, literary critic, and English professor at Vanderbilt University; consisting of loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection volume entitled A Requiem for the Renascence: The State of Fiction in the Modern South, by Walter Sullivan (1976); including Sullivan's letters to Stuart Wright regarding his book collection, 1987-1989.
Papers (1926-2003) covering the schooling and naval service of U. S. naval officer, USNA class of 1931, Captain James H. Brown, including correspondence, reports, publications, clippings, and photographs. Extensive material pertains to his service during World War II aboard the USS SHAW (1940-1942), USS ABNER READ (1942-1944), and the USS AMMEN (1944-1945), as well as his service before and after World War II.
Joseph Hewes, William Hooper, and John Penn signed the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 4, 1776. All three men were delegates of North Carolina at varying times between 1774-1777. The collection spans 1925-1926 and includes two photographic prints and two letter correspondence. The strength of the collection are the photographic prints of two of the three North Carolina Declaration of Independence Signers and biographical notes.

The largest portion (1911-1947) of this collection (1837-1993) contains correspondence, photographs, publications and ephemera related to the extensive charitable interests of Mary Estelle Crawford Fry, her husband James Woods Fry and son Gilbert Crawford Fry, all of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The charities include the Bethel Mission operating out of Hong Kong at the time of this correspondence (1938) due to war in China, the San Miao Orphanage in Saratsi (Suiyuan Province) of Northern China [later became part of Nei (Inner) Mongolia], the China International Famine Relief Commission, missions dealing with French and Belgian orphans of WWI, and the International Students' House conducted by the Christian Assoc. of the University of Pennsylvania. Earlier correspondence (1837-1869), unrelated to the above mentioned charities, is mainly written between Mrs. Mary M. Crawford of Boston, MA, Mrs. Addie A. Stien of Norristown, PA, and Sower family members in Boston and Norristown. Also included are family photographs and family history information related to the Chitty, Stroup (Strup, Strupe, Strub), and Ruede families of Forsyth Co., NC.

Material includes administrative files, correspondence, publications, photographs, and memorabilia related to Coach Clarence Stasavich's time as football coach and athletic director (1961-1975) of East Carolina College and East Carolina University.
Collection (1844-1972) of material related to Craven Co., N.C., or to maritime topics. Cemetery records for Craven Co., N.C., list 800 tombstones and include some hand-drawn maps and local historical notes. Records of the New Bern Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, New Bern, N.C., include a minute book (1954-1966), membership roll calls, correspondence, clippings, notes, reports, resolutions, and other materials. Postcards, stereographs, and sheet music concern naval and maritime themes and include World War I patriotic sheet music. Scrapbook (1919-1922) contains clippings on the construction of concrete ships at the Newport Shipbuilding Corporation of New Bern, N.C., and on the New Bern Bears baseball team. Other postcards and printed materials concern the North Carolina Outer Banks ferries; Bethlehem Steel Corporation; and the U.S. Navy, including the USS Maine, early submarines USS Porpoise and USS Shark, the USS San Francisco, and a compilation of articles written during WWI for the onboard newspaper of the USS George Washington entitled The Hatchet of the United States Ship George Washington by Captain Edwin T. Pollock and Lieutenant Paul F. Bloomhardt.
