Dickey family of New York and Michigan and William Symington Brown, M. D., who served as a surgeon in the 33rd and 55th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, 1863, during the Civil War. Unrelated is a photograph of U.S. Vice President Barkley attending a Roosevelt Dinner held at East Carolina Teachers College (now ECU) in 1950.

This collection contains literary and personal papers of Dr. Peter L. Makuck, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of the English Department, East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina, where he taught from 1978 to 2006. Included are correspondence, lecture and teaching notes, and drafts of poems and short stories. A large portion of this collection pertains to the publication Tar River Poetry from its founding in 1978 by Dr. Makuck, as a publication of the English Department at ECU, until 2015. Spoon was a surveyor who was supervisor of public roads in Alamance County and worked as an agent of the U.S. Department of Agriculture as well as a teacher, inventor, and traveling salesman.
