Oral history interview (11/20/2003) by Naomi Winkelman, in Greenville, NC, pertaining to Elizabeth Hamilton (1930-2003), her childhood and education in Pittsburgh, PA, and Pennsylvania State University (B.S. Foods and Nutrition), Ohio State University (M.S.Dietetics), her career as a consulting dietitian in Youngstown, OH, Chapel Hill, NC, and Greenville (1969-2003), her marriage to East Carolina University Professor of Physical Therapy George Hamilton, and her residence in the Lakewood Pines Neighborhood. Diaries, journals and letters (1897-1906, 1986-1988) of Mormon missionaries in Eastern North Carolina (1897-1906), including William A. Adams, 1900-1902, James Godfrey, 1899-1901, William M. Hansen, 1897-1898, William R. Hobbs, 1901-1903, Lewis Johnson, 1903-1905, William A. Petty, 1905-1906, and James Taylor, 1900-1902, along with Memoirs, Notes, clippings, anecdotes and other materials compiled by Joel Grant Handcock, for use in the book Strengthened by the Storm.
Collection includes a minute book for Knights of Pythias Dobbin Lodge #13 located at Fayetteville, North Carolina, documenting its beginnings on January 12, 1874, through July 26, 1876, a typed history of the lodge, three receipts, and two meeting invitation forms.
The papers consist mainly of correspondence, North Carolina Medical Society presidential address and gavel, playbill and study guide, curriculum vitae, photographs, and newspaper articles.

On January 14, 2009, Dale Sauter (Grant Project Director) and Chris Oakley (Grant Historian) interviewed David J. Whichard II and Stuart Savage. Both Whichard and Savage have been at the Daily Reflector for most of their lives. Whichard's grandfather and his grandfather's brother founded the newspaper in the late 1800s. Savage retired in March 2009 with fifty years at the newspaper. They have both been involved in the newspaper in many capacities, including Whichard as one time publisher, and Savage as photographer. What makes this interview so special are the reflections of both Whichard and Savage about their experiences at the newspaper and in the Greenville area. Obviously, many changes have occurred since the start of the careers and the present day. These changes include both the physical processes, as well as the whole nature of the newspaper business. During this time there have also been dramatic and sweeping social transformations in Greenville that also mirror changes that occurred on a state and national level. A journal (1/19 – 6/29/1859) written by Augustus M. Handley, a young British Army officer in the 19th Regiment of Foot, of a voyage from Gravesend, England, to Calcutta, India, aboard the sailing ship H.M.S. Bucton Castle with Captain Moorsom commanding. The journal contains a detailed description of daily life aboard the Bucton Castle, including various personalities on board, daily activities, an explanation of the ship's time-keeping, a drawing of the ship with parts labeled, notes on the how-to of navigation, changing weather conditions, sea conditions, and meetings with the various ships along the way.
This collection includes 13 pieces of correspondence addressed to Mathias Embry of Vincennes, Indiana during the years 1863-1864. The bulk of the collection was written by or about John Posey (1842?-1864) and Charles Newton (1843?-1864), both Black soldiers who served in the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment. The letters provide a glimpse of the experience and motivation of Black soldiers serving during the Civil War and the effect of the war on both the enlisted and non-combatants.

Diary and military records of Carter Berkeley Simpson (1915-1944). Includes a typescript of a diary and a facsimile of the diary. The facsimile includes photographs, military records, receipts of letters, correspondence, and a description of daily routine activities during Simpson's service and as a prisoner of war.
Papers include Joseph B. Philips record book, Walter E. Philips' memoirs, poems and other writings, and biographical information about several Philips men.
Private journals/ships' logs (October 1860 - July 1878) of Benjamin Thompson, master of the brigs Progressive Age and T. A. Darrell, and the ships Sportsman, and Harrisburg (v. 1, 1860-1865), commander of the ship Columbia (v. 2, 1865-1870), master of the ship Peruvian (v. 3, 1870-1872), and captain of the clipper ship Great Admiral (v. 4, 1874-1878), illustrating his career aboard sailing ships trading between England, the east and west coasts of America, Southeast Asia (Singapore, Manila, and Hong Kong), and Tokyo, Japan, including highly detailed and dramatic accounts of shipboard life and commercial operations.
