University Publications: Pieces O' Eight

Students under the direction of a faculty advisor produced Pieces O' Eight beginning in 1939 to share the literary talent of students. In addition to short stories and essays, other sections of the magazine included pages devoted to humor, opinions, and advertisements of campus events.

Charles Morton (Little Charlie Morton) Photographs

Photographs and negatives of African American minstrel show performers (most, if not all, are members of Silas Green from New Orleans show) both on and off stage. These negatives and photographs were made from the originals (1932-1942, undated) in 1998 and the whereabouts of the originals are unknown. Charles Morton starred as Little Charlie Morton Jr. with the Silas Green from New Orleans tent travelling show and posters listed him as Silas Green's youngest star.

Loonis R. McGlohon Papers

Papers (1921-2002) musical scores, published sheet music and lyrics, biographical articles, contracts, LPs, cassettes, videotapes, reel to reel tapes, compact discs, clippings and photographs pertaining to noted North Carolinian Loonis R. McGlohon's career as a musical composer, arranger, orchestra leader and performer of jazz, popular and sacred music. Many items also relate to McGlohon's personal life such as photographs, reel to reel tapes of family events, passports, deeds, wills, death and birth certificates, military discharge papers and correspondence with well-known musicians, actors and political figures.

The C. B. West collection consists of a ledger documenting construction projects of C. B. West and his son in Greenville and other cities; and materials purchased from such suppliers as W. H. Dail of Greenville; and three Greenville Mayor's Court record books documenting minor crimes in Greenville.

Millie and Christine McCoy Collection

Circa 1900 cabinet photograph and circa 1870 carte de visite of Millie and Christine McCoy, Black conjoined twins enslaved, in Columbus County, North Carolina (1851-1912). Cabinet photograph was taken by Frank Wendt, Boonton, New Jersey, and is autographed on verso "Millie-Christine". Also included is a signed autographed letter and two locks of hair said to belong to Millie and Christine McCoy.

Records of the College of Education: Records of the Science Camp for Academically Gifted Students

East Carolina University's Science Camp for Academically Gifted Students includes an in-depth instructional curriculum, free and structured recreation periods and an evening lecture series. The facutly and staff of the camp consists of ECU personnel and local science teachers with various specialities as well as dormitory counselors. Students attend classes in university classrooms and laboratories and are housed in a university dorm. Participants are selected on the basis of (1) the recommendation of a teacher, counselor, or principal; (2) grades in science and mathematics; (3) latest acheivement test scores; and, (4) the date of application.

Evelyn McNeill Papers

In 1972, Evelyn McNeill was offered a position as an assistant professor of anatomy at East Carolina University School of Medicine (renamed Brody School of Medicine in 1999). She was hired to teach neuroanatomy to medical students as well as physical and occupational therapy students. During her career at the medical school (1972-2001), Evelyn opened her home to students. She began traditions of hosting an end-of-first-year party and another for Halloween. Included in this collection are personal photographs from these parties, historical photographs of the growth and development of the school of medicine, newspaper clippings of medical student announcements, and medical school class photos and rosters during the period of 1972 to 2004.
