On January 14, 2009, Dale Sauter (Grant Project Director) and Chris Oakley (Grant Historian) interviewed David J. Whichard II and Stuart Savage. Both Whichard and Savage have been at the Daily Reflector for most of their lives. Whichard's grandfather and his grandfather's brother founded the newspaper in the late 1800s. Savage retired in March 2009 with fifty years at the newspaper. They have both been involved in the newspaper in many capacities, including Whichard as one time publisher, and Savage as photographer. What makes this interview so special are the reflections of both Whichard and Savage about their experiences at the newspaper and in the Greenville area. Obviously, many changes have occurred since the start of the careers and the present day. These changes include both the physical processes, as well as the whole nature of the newspaper business. During this time there have also been dramatic and sweeping social transformations in Greenville that also mirror changes that occurred on a state and national level. Between the world wars he had several appointments and also served as commander of the destroyer USS Sands and the battleship USS Nevada. During World War II, he saw service as President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Special Naval Observer in Europe, August 1940-April 1942; as Commander, South Pacific Area and South Pacific Force, and the battle for Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands, April-October 1942; as Commander of the Fourteenth Naval District and the Hawaiian Sea Frontier, 1943-1944; and as Commander of United States Naval Forces in Europe, 1944-1945.
Papers (1917-1941) of Frank M. Wooten Sr. (1875-1941), a leading Greenville attorney, Superior Court judge, and member of the N.C. General Assembly, and Greenville mayor, consisting of correspondence during first World War, letters, political campaign, pamphlets concerning tobacco, cultivation, agricultural alcohol, clipping, financial papers, etc.
A journal (1/19 – 6/29/1859) written by Augustus M. Handley, a young British Army officer in the 19th Regiment of Foot, of a voyage from Gravesend, England, to Calcutta, India, aboard the sailing ship H.M.S. Bucton Castle with Captain Moorsom commanding. The journal contains a detailed description of daily life aboard the Bucton Castle, including various personalities on board, daily activities, an explanation of the ship's time-keeping, a drawing of the ship with parts labeled, notes on the how-to of navigation, changing weather conditions, sea conditions, and meetings with the various ships along the way.

Papers (1897-1972, undated) of a U. S. Naval officer, a graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy, 1905, who commanded the destroyer USS JARVIS during World War I, and as ordnance inspector at the U. S. Naval Ammunition Depot during World War II, consisting of correspondence, a war diary, orders, proceedings, reports, thesis, albums, photographs, postal cards, financial records, citations, certificates, biographies and miscellaneous.
Collection contains material related to the Smiley family history in North Carolina collected by Joan and Ralph Smiley, photocopies of material related to the life and death of country music musician Arthur Lee "Red" Smiley, Jr. of Asheville, NC, who had toured with Don Reno and the Tennessee Cut-Ups, and clippings from the Raleigh News and Observer related to Klan violence in Eastern NC in 1967. Other material related to Immanuel Baptist Church in Greenville, to Agnes Wadlington Barrett, and to the Putnam Family have been moved to other collections.
Scrapbook, clippings, correspondence, photographs, reports, and other materials related to the World War II career of Lt. Commander Richard Hamilton Smith aboard the USS Teak and the USS Thomas J. Gray, and especially related to the successful evacuation during 7-9 September 1945 of British, Australian and American prisoners of war held by the Japanese at Kiirun, Formosa [Taiwan].

Collection consists of material related to the history of the Lynndale Garden Club of Greenville, North Carolina, from its founding in 1974 to 2016. Included are meeting minutes, executive board minutes, newsletters, photographs, clippings, yearbooks, brochures, membership rosters, treasurer reports, constitutions and by-laws, and engagement calendar books put out by the Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc., which contain photographs of winning arrangements by garden club members (including members of Lynndale Garden Club).
