Royce Shingleton Papers

This collection includes the papers of retired History Professor from Darton College (now part of Albany State University in Georgia) and author Dr. Royce G. Shingleton. These papers document his literary career in the fields of Naval History and mid-nineteenth century American South. His books include High Seas Confederate (about John Newland Maffitt), John Taylor Wood: Sea Ghost of the Confederacy, and Richard Peters: Champion of the New South; he also contributed to William N. Still's book The Confederate Navy. A native of Stantonsburg, North Carolina, Shingleton has done genealogical work relative to the Shingleton family that is also found in this collection.

George T. Bowman Papers

This archive covers the early life and long United States Army career of Brigadier General George T. Bowman (b. 1869 and d. 1951). His career included service (stateside) during the Spanish-American War with the New York 65th Volunteer Infantry, with various New York volunteer and regular Army units in the Philippines (1899-1904), in Cuba (1906-1909), with Gen. John Pershing on the Mexican border (1915-1916), during World War I (1918-1919), and in Germany after World War I ended. Included are correspondence, orders and other military documents, photographs, newspaper and magazine articles, maps, narratives and commentary by Bowman, and a diary.

A. P. Wilde Papers

This collection (1909-1924) contains seventeen letters, one Christmas card, and a Panamanian calendar sent by A. P. Wilde from Empire in the Canal Zone, to relatives in Louisa County, Virginia. During this time Mr. Wilde was employed by the Isthmian Canal Commission in the Department of Examination of Accounts while the Panama Canal was being built across the Isthmus of Panama. Topics discussed are work on the Canal, the effects of drought, earthquakes, and hurricanes, difficulties of sea travel, treatment of malaria, the drawdown of clerks as the Canal is completed, and his political opinions.
