Papers (1873-[1887-1901]-1958) of a Black lawyer, minister and teacher, in New Bern, N.C., who handled pension applications for many African Americans who served in the Union Army and Navy during the Civil War or their widows, consisting of pension affidavit ledgers, pension certificate ledgers, correspondence, pamphlets, daybooks, photographs, poetry, essays, application forms, tax receipts, etc.
The collection includes various aspects of public health in North Carolina beginning in the early 20th century.
Contains photographs by Jan Sellers Cowards of Eastern North Carolina.

Papers (1942-1962) of U.S. Navy enlisted man, who retired as Chief Aviation Boatswain's Mate (E-7) pertaining to his service aboard the USS INTREPID, USS BONHOMME RICHARD, USS BOXER, USS TICONDEROGA, USS PINE ISLAND, USS FORRESTAL, and various shore installations, including 3 8 mm film strips (ca. 550 feet) of flight operations aboard the USS BOXER, 1952, clippings, printed materials, manuscript materials, and photographic prints.
Collection includes a letter written by Ann Elizabeth Bogart, Washington, N.C., to "My dear Aunt," January 8, 1865, describing wartime conditions in Washington, N.C., and vicinity, a 2-page partial transcription of the letter, a tintype of a woman (possibly Ann Elizabeth Bogart), and two color images of the gravestone for Ann Bogart and the plot where she is buried in Washington, N.C. Also included are research materials concerning David Nevius Bogart of Washington, N.C., and related to the Bogart, Biggs, O'Cain, Lucas, Bonner, Peyton, and Snoad families of Beaufort County, N.C. Photographs, genealogy notes, Bible records, and correspondence relate to the Smallwood, Williams, and Hassell families of Williamston, N.C. Letters related to brothers Will and Bruce Smallwood discuss Will's travels and death (1918) in Alaska and Bruce's life and death (after 1894) in Mexico.
Collection (1930s-1970s) of North Carolina Ferries manuals such as "Specifications, Pamlico Sound Ferry, Virginia Dare," "NC State Ferry Operations;" also a NC State Highway Commission manual; also NC State Ferries and NC Board of Transportation forms; and NC State Highway Commission ferry boat plans and contract plans. Files (1969-1994) belonging to retired ECU Biology professor Dr. Vincent J. Bellis pertaining to the environmental impact of the Chicod Creek (North Carolina) channelization, the East Carolina University Institute for Coastal and Marine Resources, North Carolina Academy of Science, and material concerning the Sierra Club of NC and other environmental groups. Included are correspondence, affidavits, reports, notes, conference proceedings, environmental studies, and newsletters.
Papers include photocopies of transcriptions of correspondence (1863-1864) written by Josiah Robert Peele Ellis of Wilson Co., North Carolina, to his wife Elizabeth Grimes Ellis while he was serving in Company C of the 43rd N.C. Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The letters were transcribed in 1977 by Hugh Buckner Johnston who also provided supplementary information. Also included are genealogy records for the Ellis and Hill families of Eastern North Carolina.
Papers of David R. Slavitt (1967-2009 [Bulk: 1970-1994], undated) documenting the life and literary career of the prolific White Plains, New York-born American writer, poet, translator, and educator at several universities, who has authored more than 100 books; consisting of manuscript typescripts, loose manuscripts transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection, and proofs of his works, including his novel Cold Comfort; also including several works under his pseudonym "Henry Sutton" notably a typescript of his poem The Cock Book: Or A Child's First Book of Pornography; and proofs of Vector: A Novel (1970).
