Wilson was also a newspaper publisher, Whig – Free Soil – Republican Party politician who served as Massachusetts State Representative, 1840- 1842; Massachusetts State Senator, 1843-1845, 1850; United States Senator, 1855-1872; and Vice President of the United States, 1872-1875, under President U. S. Grant. Ledger only relates to business dealings and personal accounts, not to political dealings.

Papers of Lincoln Fitzell (1958) documenting the life and literary career of noted the San Francisco, California-born poet, who also worked as a longshoreman; consisting of manuscript typescripts of his literary essays, short stories, poems, and a novel The Sword and the Dragon (1958).

Locations include Fayetteville, Elizabeth City, High Point, Wilmington, Atlantic Beach, Morehead City, Belhaven, Edenton, Pitt County, Camp Lejeune, Reidsville, Rocky Mount, St. Pauls Washington and New Bern. Subjects include the Askew Family of Hertford County, Greensboro College, Fayetteville flood of 1908, the Confederate Ram Albemarle and the tobacco industry.

Collection (2001–2002) of materials concerning the American destroyer USS Emmons (DD-457/DMS-22), which was the last American naval fighting ship to be commissioned prior to U.S. entry in World War II, and which sank on 5 April 1945, after being badly damaged by Japanese kamikaze attacks to the north of Okinawa. Compiled by a veterans' association, the collection includes a membership roster, historical clippings, photocopies of the association's newsletters, videotape cassettes, including 1 documenting the rediscovery of the ship's resting place, on 19 February 2001, and 2 videotapes by Japanese television network, NNN, broadcast on 1 July 2001.
