Collection consists of material related to the history of the Lynndale Garden Club of Greenville, North Carolina, from its founding in 1974 to 2016. Included are meeting minutes, executive board minutes, newsletters, photographs, clippings, yearbooks, brochures, membership rosters, treasurer reports, constitutions and by-laws, and engagement calendar books put out by the Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc., which contain photographs of winning arrangements by garden club members (including members of Lynndale Garden Club).
Papers of Maurice Sendak (1982-1986) documenting the life and literary career the famed Brooklyn, New York-born American artist, illustrator and writer of children's books; consisting of partial, non-consecutive, uncorrected bound proofs of Nutcracker (1984) the fantasy by E. T. A. [Ernst Theodor Amadeus] Hoffmann (1776-1822) that became the basis of the ballet of the same name by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893); translated by Ralph [Frederick] Manheim (1907-1992); pictures by Maurice Sendak; also including loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection volume entitled The Art of Maurice Sendak (1982-1985), by Selma G. Lanes, including letters by and about Maurice Sendak to Stuart Wright.
Collection includes papers related to the personal life and non-university activities of East Carolina University History Professor Lawrence Fay Brewster (ECU professor from 1945 to 1969) for whom the Lawrence F. Brewster Classroom Building on campus was named in 1974. Included are materials (1857-1945) related to his parents and ancestors, Brewster's early life and education through earning his Ph.D., his teaching job at Cranleigh School for Boys in St. Petersburg, Florida, and his work with the Works Progress Administration as Research Editor for the Historical Records Survey of North Carolina. The vast majority (1960-1991) of the collection concerns his work as historiographer for the Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina and writing his "History of the Protestant Episcopal, The Diocese of East Carolina."
Papers of Madison Smartt Bell (1922-1997 [Bulk: 1957-1990], undated) documenting the life and literary career of the Nashville, Tennessee-born American novelist, including manuscript materials, proofs of published works, loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection, and oversized materials, relating primarily to his books Zero db and Other Stories, Barking Man, and The Washington Square Ensemble, and others.
Records (1974-1975), including correspondence, minutes, agenda, programs, By-laws, presidential address.
Papers (1870-1981) including correspondence, legal documents, ledgers, literary manuscripts, stock certificates, deeds, charters, minutes, photographs, clippings, financial records, orders and publications.
Records (1909-1930), of Greene County Mercantile firm operated by Eugene Simpson Edwards and Norville F. Palmer in Hookerton and ledger (1902) of J. J. Edwards.
Records (May 1940-November 1945) include mainly correspondence between Thomas William Linder of Raleigh, North Carolina, and his girlfriend (later wife) Evelyn Doris Hill of Cayce, South Carolina. Mr. Linder worked for the railroad and later in life was an engineer with Amtrak. The letters from April 1942 through August 1945 document his service in the U.S. Army with the 816th Engineer Aviation Battalion during World War II. He was promoted to corporal in September 1942. Other items include two photographs, holiday cards, a pay stub and a poem.
Papers of Jonathan Baumbach (1968) documenting the life and literary career of the New York City-born American playwright, novelist, short story writer, and educator at Brooklyn College; consisting of an unbound proof of his second novel entitled What Comes Next (1968).
Papers of Lewis W. Green (1945-1984 [Bulk: 1984]) documenting the life and literary career of the Haywood County, North Carolina-born, journalist at the Asheville, novelist, newspaper publisher, and educator; consisting of manuscript materials relating to his novel The Silence of the Snakes (1984) which, like many of Green's stories concerned mountain people and was set in the 1930s; a biographical sketch of Green; and sheet music for the song David (Frances Frost) (1945).
Included are the records (1961-2020) of the Dilettante Book Club of Greenville, North Carolina. Members of the ECC (East Carolina College) Faculty Wives Club met in September 1961 to start the book club and established the name Dilettante Book Club at their October 1961 meeting.
