Oral history interview (11/20/2003) by Naomi Winkelman, in Greenville, NC, pertaining to Elizabeth Hamilton (1930-2003), her childhood and education in Pittsburgh, PA, and Pennsylvania State University (B.S. Foods and Nutrition), Ohio State University (M.S.Dietetics), her career as a consulting dietitian in Youngstown, OH, Chapel Hill, NC, and Greenville (1969-2003), her marriage to East Carolina University Professor of Physical Therapy George Hamilton, and her residence in the Lakewood Pines Neighborhood. Collection includes papers related to the personal life and non-university activities of East Carolina University History Professor Lawrence Fay Brewster (ECU professor from 1945 to 1969) for whom the Lawrence F. Brewster Classroom Building on campus was named in 1974. Included are materials (1857-1945) related to his parents and ancestors, Brewster's early life and education through earning his Ph.D., his teaching job at Cranleigh School for Boys in St. Petersburg, Florida, and his work with the Works Progress Administration as Research Editor for the Historical Records Survey of North Carolina. The vast majority (1960-1991) of the collection concerns his work as historiographer for the Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina and writing his "History of the Protestant Episcopal, The Diocese of East Carolina."
Papers (1862-1914) concern the life of Benjamin Holt Ticknor (1842-1914) of Boston, Massachusetts, after he enlisted in the 45th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, Co. G, in 1862 during the Civil War. Included are thirteen letters written to his father during the war with nine (November 1863-March 1864) of them written from Fort Totten in New Bern, N.C. Several documents relate to a court martial and trial he participated in; other documents relate to his postwar involvement in the Loyal Legion and genealogy research. Also included are photographs of his funeral procession. Transferred (not purchased) from Denning House Antiquarian Books & Manuscripts.
Photographs and negatives of African American minstrel show performers (most, if not all, are members of Silas Green from New Orleans show) both on and off stage. These negatives and photographs were made from the originals (1932-1942, undated) in 1998 and the whereabouts of the originals are unknown. Charles Morton starred as Little Charlie Morton Jr. with the Silas Green from New Orleans tent travelling show and posters listed him as Silas Green's youngest star.
