John Tillery Gregory Papers

This collection contains the papers of Halifax Co., North Carolina, Superior Court Clerk John Tillery Gregory (1832-1905) and also includes correspondence with his sister and his children. Gregory operated a store with W. W. Daniels, was Clerk of Superior Court for many years, was town treasurer, and fought in the Civil War with Co G of the 12th North Carolina State Troops. The son of Dr. Thomas Wynns Gregory and Mary Tillery Gregory, he was married to Ellen Augusta Clarke and they had nine children.

Richard E. Rogers Jr. Collection

Collection (1883–1910) consisting of correspondence, eight Civil War pension application ledgers, 2 account books and church record book. The majority of the collection consists of claims for pensions by blacks who served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy during the Civil War. The claims request compensation for wounds and injuries received or diseases contracted by the applicants. Claims were submitted either by the veterans themselves or by their survivors. While the majority of claimants appear to have lived in the vicinity of New Bern and James City, North Carolina, many resided throughout the central portion of eastern North Carolina. The ledgers were once the property of Frederick Douglass, a black lawyer, minister, and teacher of New Bern who handled the claims.

US Brig Porpoise Ship's Log

The ship's log of the US Brig Porpoise, dated 19 February 1845 to 16 June 1846, was kept during a cruise from New York to the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. It details navigational statistics, weather reports, sightings and hailing of other ships, and punishments of crew infractions. The author was probably Midshipman Benjamin Lee Henderson and the log was signed in fifteen places by Lt. Commander William E. Hunt.
