S. Autobiography of Joseph Greene Boyette's life from his childhood (born 1929) upbringing in eastern North Carolina until 1952 when he got out of the U.S. Navy and headed to Duke University to take classes. Boyette actually starts his memoir with some information on the extremely hard upbringing his mother (born 1903) had and also includes a section of notes that his mother wrote about the childhood experiences of her 3 boys.
Collection contains a scrapbook (1943-1945) related to Betty Bonner Higgins' World War II service in W.A.V.E.S (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). Included is an assortment of photographs of her family, of herself and her fellow W.A.V.E.S. during training at Indiana University, and of her boyfriend aboard the USS Admiralty Islands and soldiers in the Pacific Theater. Assorted military notices, newspaper clippings, ephemera, personal correspondence, and two pamphlets describing service in the W.A.V.E.S. are also in the scrapbook.
Papers (1862-1914) concern the life of Benjamin Holt Ticknor (1842-1914) of Boston, Massachusetts, after he enlisted in the 45th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers, Co. G, in 1862 during the Civil War. Included are thirteen letters written to his father during the war with nine (November 1863-March 1864) of them written from Fort Totten in New Bern, N.C. Several documents relate to a court martial and trial he participated in; other documents relate to his postwar involvement in the Loyal Legion and genealogy research. Also included are photographs of his funeral procession. Transferred (not purchased) from Denning House Antiquarian Books & Manuscripts.
Muster roll for a detachment of the 29th Regiment U. S. Colored Troops Detachment under the command of Capt. Wilson Camp, dated June 30 – August 31, 1865. The roll documents the names, ranks, enlistment data, and service records of the 17-man detachment consisting of soldiers from Illinois, Indiana, and Maryland.
