Society records (1949-1992), including correspondence (1949-1981), minutes (1952-1969, 1972, 1974-1978), constitution, membership lists, financial records, and proceedings.

These records (1894-2000) pertain to the Salisbury-Rowan Lodge No. 100 of the Knights of Pythias in North Carolina, the Salisbury Lodge No. 24 and the Rowan Lodge No. 100. Included are Minute books, Membership Roll books, semi-annual reports, correspondence, financial papers, applications for membership, withdrawal and transfer cards, dismissal and suspension certificates, rosters, directories, photographs and publications that contain procedures for ranks and rituals. Two documents (1898, undated) relate to the Zeb Vance Lodge No. 65 of North Carolina.

This collection (ca. 188196-1986) includes items collected by the donor's father Fred S. Hudson, Jr., related to early American illustrators, especially for children's literature. Included are prints, magazine covers, whole magazines, illustrations for magazine stories, an original pen and ink drawing, advertisements, books, posters, figurines, frontispieces and china plates.

The collection includes papers and publications produced or related to the administration of John Decatur Messick. Materials include biographical records, correspondence, articles, newspaper clippings, administrative records, and other miscellaneous items.

Collection consists of five scrapbooks containing items related to the life of Judge Oliver H. Allen (b. March 20, 1850, Wake Co., N.C.; raised in Duplin Co., N.C.; d. December 16, 1925, Kinston, N.C.) and his ancestors and descendants. The date span covered is 1826 to 1980. Of particular interest are items related to Judge Allen's life, the Hicks family of Granville Co., N.C. (1826-1832 and photocopies of documents for late 1700s), the WWI service of William A. Allen and Judge Allen's sons Matthew H. Allen and Reynold Tatum Allen, and the lives of Judge Allen's daughter Martha Allen Barnes and her daughter Sarah Allen Barnes who married Benjamin Bruce Sugg, Jr. Items include clippings, correspondence, Oxford Academy and Trinity College student materials, photographs, resolutions, WWI military records, funeral bulletins, booklets, prints, and postcards. Additionally the collection contains courting correspondence (1912-1914) written by a Naval officer from Lenoir Co., N.C., while stationed aboard ships, at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and at Vera Cruz, Mexico.

The Special Collections teaching collection consists of sources used for archival classroom instruction. Material within the collection was identified as out of scope for our regular collections, yet still useful as a primary or secondary source in our teaching sessions.

Oral history interview with William B. Martin, Professor Emeritus from the College of Education at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, relating to his experiences (1941-1945) in the U.S. Navy during World War II, including his participation in the Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944.

This collection includes a copy of a typescript of the autobiographical sketch written in 1893 by Eastern North Carolina physician and educator Richard Henry Lewis, Sr. (1832-1917). It refers to important family history in his background and describes important events in his life up until 1893.

The largest portion (1911-1947) of this collection (1837-1993) contains correspondence, photographs, publications and ephemera related to the extensive charitable interests of Mary Estelle Crawford Fry, her husband James Woods Fry and son Gilbert Crawford Fry, all of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The charities include the Bethel Mission operating out of Hong Kong at the time of this correspondence (1938) due to war in China, the San Miao Orphanage in Saratsi (Suiyuan Province) of Northern China [later became part of Nei (Inner) Mongolia], the China International Famine Relief Commission, missions dealing with French and Belgian orphans of WWI, and the International Students' House conducted by the Christian Assoc. of the University of Pennsylvania. Earlier correspondence (1837-1869), unrelated to the above mentioned charities, is mainly written between Mrs. Mary M. Crawford of Boston, MA, Mrs. Addie A. Stien of Norristown, PA, and Sower family members in Boston and Norristown. Also included are family photographs and family history information related to the Chitty, Stroup (Strup, Strupe, Strub), and Ruede families of Forsyth Co., NC.
