Collection consists of five scrapbooks containing items related to the life of Judge Oliver H. Allen (b. March 20, 1850, Wake Co., N.C.; raised in Duplin Co., N.C.; d. December 16, 1925, Kinston, N.C.) and his ancestors and descendants. The date span covered is 1826 to 1980. Of particular interest are items related to Judge Allen's life, the Hicks family of Granville Co., N.C. (1826-1832 and photocopies of documents for late 1700s), the WWI service of William A. Allen and Judge Allen's sons Matthew H. Allen and Reynold Tatum Allen, and the lives of Judge Allen's daughter Martha Allen Barnes and her daughter Sarah Allen Barnes who married Benjamin Bruce Sugg, Jr. Items include clippings, correspondence, Oxford Academy and Trinity College student materials, photographs, resolutions, WWI military records, funeral bulletins, booklets, prints, and postcards. Papers of Andrew Nelson Lytle (1934–1992, undated) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Murfreesboro, Tennessee-born, American biographer, novelist, dramatist, literary critic, educator, and editor, who became a leader and spokesman for the Southern Agrarian literary movement, including correspondence, manuscript materials, typescripts and holographs, printed materials, and loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection.

The Nathaniel Pettit Joy Collection (1913-1919 [Bulk: 1918-1919], undated) consists primarily of letters he and his wife Mary received from two New Jersey soldiers and two New Jersey sailors written to Nathaniel Pettit Joy and his wife Mary of Groveville, New Jersey. The soldiers, Raymond "Bud" Danley and William "Bill" Inman were privates in the Headquarters Company of the 309th Infantry Infantry, 78th Division of the American Expeditionary Force; they wrote from England, France and Fort Dix (New Jersey); the sailors were A. C. Griffiths sailor aboard the battleship USS ARIZONA in 1918-1919; and Cousin Edwin, who served aboard the USS SIBONEY, a hospital ship, 1918-1919; the collection also includes several miscellaneous items, including French postcards, photographs of unidentified soldiers and sailors, and a letter written from a Cpl. Walter P. Rogers, who was a guard at a Russian prisoner of war camp in Chemnitz, Germany early in 1919.

This collection contains letters (1964-1967) written by brothers Terrence and Dennis Miller of St. Louis, Missouri, who joined the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Letters written by Dennis Miller during 1967 document his time serving in Vietnam as part of 3rd BN, 60th Ord Co. Also included are letters written by fellow soldiers and friends (through 1971), service records, negatives, military payment certificates, and Vietnamese money.

Frank Stephenson Jr. relating to the Benjamin B. Winborne Family, the R. J. Gatling Family, E. Frank Stephenson Jr., and other people in North Carolina and Virginia, especially the Murfreesboro, North Carolina, area. The documents were collected by E. Frank Stephenson Jr. for research use while writing numerous historical publications and to make the items available for other researchers to utilize. Many of Mr. Stephenson's publications are also included in the collection.

The Vertical File Collection contains individual items that don't fit into existing collections. There is no overall theme or subject connecting them. Items included vary from photographs, broadsides, pamphlets, advertising materials, programs, negatives, and postcards to land grants, genealogy notes, and a music transcription book. Inclusive dates are 1792-2016.
