Donald E. Collins Collection

Joseph Hewes and William Hooper Collection

Joseph Hewes, William Hooper, and John Penn signed the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 4, 1776. All three men were delegates of North Carolina at varying times between 1774-1777. The collection spans 1925-1926 and includes two photographic prints and two letter correspondence. The strength of the collection are the photographic prints of two of the three North Carolina Declaration of Independence Signers and biographical notes.

Josiah Clark Chadwick Papers

The collection includes materials (1898-1959) documenting the work of Shackleford Banks native Josiah Clark Chadwick working on freighters running from North Carolina to New York, and then with the Army Corps of Engineers in North Carolina (1927-1959) working the Eastern N.C. federal waterway projects on diesel engines and then inspecting dredges. Included are family history, Chadwick's work history, training materials, engineers' level books, logbooks, and inventories of engineering property in Chadwick's charge.

Croatan Archaeological Site Collection

This collection contains two artifacts excavated at the Cape Creek site (Croatan), Buxton, Dare County, North Carolina, in 1998 during the Croatan Archaeological Project, East Carolina University Professor Emeritus David Sutton Phelps, Director. The artifacts are a signet ring engraved with a "lion passant," prancing lion, crest (Specimen Acc. No. 1283-1297) with dimensions: 0.75" (l) x 0.5" (w) x 0.25" (d) and weight: 0.25 oz.; and a musket firing lock (Specimen Acc. No. 1283-1976). Research results indicate they are probably of early 17th century origin, but late 16th century origin can't be definitively ruled out.

Milton P. Fields Oral History Interview

Oral history interview with Milton P. Fields relates to his experiences as a photographer in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga (CV-3) during World War II; and also his early life and family background (Interview 1, Sept. 20, 2013) . Interview 2 (Oct. 4, 2013) relates primarily to his post-World War II experiences, including his education at East Carolina University (1945-1949), his law school attendance at Emory University and Wake Forest University (1949-1953); and his life in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, as a prosecuting attorney and partner in a law firm (1950s-2013).

Philip S. McMullan, Jr., Research Materials on North Carolina's Blacklands

This collection contains the research materials used by Philip S. McMullan, Jr., in his consulting work and in his study of the Blacklands area of North Carolina which is bounded by the Albemarle Sound on the north and and Pamlico River on the south. McMullan's research resulted in the book North Carolina Blacklands Treasure, published in 2016, which he coauthored with Cy Rich, Jr., who was the first president of First Colony Farms, and First Colony Farms employees Joe Landino and Steve Barnes. McMullan consulted on the First Colony Farms Peat Mining Proposal and an Economic Impact Study for a joint First Colony Farms (owned by McLean Industries) and Prudential Insurance farm development project (Prulean Farms) in mainland Dare County, North Carolina.
