Collection contains material related to the Smiley family history in North Carolina collected by Joan and Ralph Smiley, photocopies of material related to the life and death of country music musician Arthur Lee "Red" Smiley, Jr. of Asheville, NC, who had toured with Don Reno and the Tennessee Cut-Ups, and clippings from the Raleigh News and Observer related to Klan violence in Eastern NC in 1967. Other material related to Immanuel Baptist Church in Greenville, to Agnes Wadlington Barrett, and to the Putnam Family have been moved to other collections.

Papers (1905-1906) of Tarboro, NC tobacconist who traveled to Japan and China, 1905-1930, consisting of two diaries and one letter.

The collection includes publications created by the ECU School of Medicine and the University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina, formerly Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

On January 14, 2009, Dale Sauter (Grant Project Director) and Chris Oakley (Grant Historian) interviewed David J. Whichard II and Stuart Savage. Both Whichard and Savage have been at the Daily Reflector for most of their lives. Whichard's grandfather and his grandfather's brother founded the newspaper in the late 1800s. Savage retired in March 2009 with fifty years at the newspaper. They have both been involved in the newspaper in many capacities, including Whichard as one time publisher, and Savage as photographer. What makes this interview so special are the reflections of both Whichard and Savage about their experiences at the newspaper and in the Greenville area. Obviously, many changes have occurred since the start of the careers and the present day. These changes include both the physical processes, as well as the whole nature of the newspaper business. During this time there have also been dramatic and sweeping social transformations in Greenville that also mirror changes that occurred on a state and national level. This collection (ca. 1960s to ca. 1990s) consists of about ten cubic feet of photographs, slides, contact prints, proofs and negatives of images made by Lindsay "Stuart" Savage while he was a photographer for the Daily Reflector newspaper in Greenville, North Carolina. He retired from the Daily Reflector, after serving in many capacities, in 2009, fifty years from the day he was hired there as a news reporter.

This log book contains daily entries from October 29, 1816, through November 29, 1818, for the Schooner Hilan. John Hand is the Master of the schooner which sailed between eastern seaboard ports Philadelphia, Norfolk, Richmond, and Charleston. Entries cover weather, cargo listings, upkeep of the schooner, issues with crew members and passengers, and problems with the schooner related to harsh weather.

This collection consists of the family records, photographs, and genealogy records collected by Sarah Westray Bunn of Elizabeth City, North Carolina. She was an East Carolina Teachers' College 1936 graduate and served in the Army Nurse Corps from 1941 to 1966. Included are genealogy notes concerning the Lewis, Suggs, Speight, Powell, Harrison, and Exum families of Eastern N.C.; late 19th century and 20th Century photographs; correspondence (1905-1998); an 1847 book of children's poetry; clippings; genealogy charts; and a tombstone rubbing.

The clipping file provides subject access to the North Carolina Collection's clipping file of selected newspaper articles taken primarily from the Greenville Daily Reflector and Raleigh News and Observer.

Diary (1845-1847) kept by a traveling New York daguerreotypist whose identity is unknown. He traveled throughout Eastern North Carolina (October 1846-January 1847) and wrote down his impressions of Edenton, Plymouth, Williamston, Greenville and Washington, North Carolina, as well as Norfolk, Virginia. A small portion of the diary includes instructions on how to clean daguerreotype plates and take good portraits.

This collection contains papers belonging to Robert L. Ramey who served in World War II, had a career as a tobacconist, and was active in local government and community activities in Greenville, North Carolina. Papers include correspondence (1938, 1960s, 1990s, 2013), deeds (1950s), photographs, certificates, an oral history on CD done in 2015, clippings, paper items related to World War II, and 2 panoramic photographs of Scottish Rite members in New Bern (1958, 1965).

Michael J. Zagray was a cook aboard a U.S. Naval vessel during the early 1960s. The collection spans the years 1954-1963. It includes 69 black and white, 8" x 10" photographic prints and 3 mimeographed typescripts on the United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission meetings held at MAC HQ Area, Korea, in 1963 and 1 mimeographed typescript on "Unusual Joint Duty Officers' Meetings" from 1 January 1954 to 1 October 1963.
