These papers (1848-1882) belonged to Johnson H. Bryan, Jr.(1824-1883) of Craven County, North Carolina. Included are deeds, statements of debt and obligation, receipts, receipts for purchase and sale of enslaved people, correspondence, mortgages, bankruptcy papers, and a resolution of complaint related to tariff discriminations and maintenance deficiencies on the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad.
Private journals/ships' logs (October 1860 - July 1878) of Benjamin Thompson, master of the brigs Progressive Age and T. A. Darrell, and the ships Sportsman, and Harrisburg (v. 1, 1860-1865), commander of the ship Columbia (v. 2, 1865-1870), master of the ship Peruvian (v. 3, 1870-1872), and captain of the clipper ship Great Admiral (v. 4, 1874-1878), illustrating his career aboard sailing ships trading between England, the east and west coasts of America, Southeast Asia (Singapore, Manila, and Hong Kong), and Tokyo, Japan, including highly detailed and dramatic accounts of shipboard life and commercial operations.
The bulk of the Raymond J. Kragness Papers (1943-1946, 2000, 2004) pertains to Mr. Kragness's service in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre in World War II aboard the USS Escambia. Personal items include rites of passage membership cards (such as crossing the Equator), draft board notification, photographs, post cards of San Francisco Bay, course certificates, separation from service records and a brief family history. The remaining items pertain to his service on the USS Escambia, a fleet oiler. Included are the ship's history and directory, newsletter "Eighty Times," a list of ships fuled by the USS Escambia, plans of the day, congratulatory messages from Admiral Halsey, and invitations and tickets for commissioning and decommissioning ceremonies.

Naval Academy Class of 1941, USS NORTH CAROLINA (BB-55), Transport Divisions 14 and 10, USS SAVANNAH (CL-42), USS MISSISSIPPI (AG-128), USS OREGON CITY (CA-123), USS LEWIS HANCOCK (DD-675), USS HUSE (DE-145), USS BROWNSON (DD-868), Carrier Division 14, 17th Naval District, Kodiak, AK, and the First Naval District Intelligence Office, Boston.
Papers (1908-1967, undated) pertaining to the military career and personal life of Lieutenant General Robert Frederick Sink (1905-1965), a graduate of West Point, a pioneer in the use of airborne warfare, who commanded the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army Airborne Corps, during World War II, 1942-1945, participating in the Allied Invasion of Normandy (1944) and the Battle of the Bulge at Bastogne, Belgium (1944-1945); and served as Chief of Staff of the RYUKUS command based on Okinawa, Japan (1949); as Assistant Commander of the 7th Infantry Division in Korea (1951); as a member of the Joint Airborne Troop Board at Fort Bragg, North Carolina (1954); and as commander of the Strategic Army Corps (STRAC) and the 18th Airborne (1958); he was promoted to lieutenant general, in 1959, and took command of the U.S. Army in the Caribbean, a post he held until he retired in 1961 due to poor health; he died in 1965; the collection consists of correspondence, clippings, manuscripts, photographs & printed materials.
Collection (1945-circa 1980s, undated) of clippings, photographs, Christmas cards, World War II ration books, relating to the Parker family, "Pitch a Boogie Woogie" a film with an all-black cast, the Corner Stone Baptist Church, and Mt. Calvary Free Will Baptist Church of Greenville, North Carolina.
Papers, 1861-2011 (bulk 1940-1992), undated, of Senator Robert Burren Morgan, an ECU alumnus and lawyer, who served the state of North Carolina in a variety of elected and appointed positions. His first elected position was clerk of court in Harnett County. He was elected to the State Senate, served as president pro tempore of the Senate, and was twice elected Attorney General of North Carolina. He served in this position until 1974, when he won the United States Senate seat vacated by Senator Samuel James "Sam" Ervin, Jr. Morgan served as United States Senator from 1975 to 1981. He returned to his law practice following an unsuccessful reelection campaign and later served as Director of the State Bureau of Investigation from 1985 until 1992. Morgan served as a member of the ECU Board of Trustees for fifteen years, including nine terms as chair in the 1960s. He helped the institution achieve university status and was instrumental in establishing the ECU School of Medicine. The collection includes series relating to Morgan's family and personal matters, North Carolina Senate Files, Attorney General Files, United States Senate Files, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Files, and Oversized Materials Files. It includes manuscripts, photographs, audio and video materials, electronic records, printed materials, and ephemera.
Papers (1933-1973) of U. S. Marine Corps aviation officer (Major Gen.) who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, and who retired as commander of the Cherry Point, NC Marine Air Station, including correspondence, reports, war diaries, citations, certificates, and military records. Collection (ca. 1936-1997) relates to the life and career of Arthur Greenville McIntyre; an Lieutenant Commander of the United States Navy who was a U.S. Naval Academy graduate (Class of 1941) and who served in the Pacific theater of World War II. McIntyre served on the submarine U.S.S. Grenadier until it was lost in April 1943 by Japanese bombing. As a result of the attack, he became a prisoner of war of the Japanese and was not released until September of 1945. The bulk of the collection is on McIntyre's naval career but there is also material containing his biographical information and information on his time as a prisoner of war. Of particular interest are documents that have information on the Japanese who ran the POW camps and who were tried in the war crimes trials that were held in Japan. The documents lists their names and the sentences they received as a result of those trials. The majority of the documents in the collection are in English but some are in Japanese and Spanish with no translation.

Papers (1830 – 2010, undated) [Bulk: 1940-1970] documenting the life of Robert Lee Humber, Jr., who was born 30 May 1898 – and died 10 November 1970, in Greenville, North Carolina; after attending local schools he earned a BA from Wake Forest College, 1921; he then attended Oxford University in the United Kingdom as a Rhodes Scholar, 1921-1923; he then earned a MA from Harvard University in 1936; he moved to Paris, France, in 1926, where he married and served as an American Field Service fellow, 1926-1928, and subsequently earned a fortune as an international lawyer, art dealer, and businessman, 1930-1940, until the Fall of France, in 1940, when he, his wife, and their two sons, John and Marcel, fled the German invasion - his infant daughter Eileen died during their escape - and he returned to North Carolina, where he purchased a farm on Davis Island, established a legal career, and devoted himself to public service and to a wide range of philanthropic causes, as an educator, civic, cultural, political and religious leader; beginning in 1940, he became well-known nationally and internationally for establishing and leading the World Federation movement as a way to promote lasting world peace through international law; statewide for persuading the General Assembly and the Kress Foundation of New York to fund and establish the North Carolina Museum which opened in 1956; also as an art collector and patron of local and regional volunteer organizations; as a Democratic state senator from Pitt County, 1958-1964; as an educator who led the effort to create Pitt Technical Institute (later Pitt Community College); as a leader in the Southern Baptist denomination becoming a member of the Board of Trustees of Wake Forest College and other Baptist institutions; and as an attorney and business leader and developer; additionally, the collection includes historical files documenting the history of the World Federation in the United States, compiled by his son, John Leslie Humber.
