In this oral history, Carl Long (May 9, 1935 - January 12, 2015) discusses his professional baseball career (1952-1958) with the "Negro American League" and the Pittsburgh Pirates farm clubs including among others the Kinston (North Carolina) Eagles in the Carolina League where he was the first African American baseball player in the league; his time as the first African American deputy sheriff and first African American detective in Kinston; and his subsequent career as the first African American bus driver in Lenoir County (NC) from which he retired in 1995.

Elias Carr (1839-1900) of Edgecombe County, a member of the Democratic Party, was the governor of North Carolina (1893-1897) and president of the N.C. State Farmers' Alliance and Industrial Union (1889-1892).
Joseph Hewes, William Hooper, and John Penn signed the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 4, 1776. All three men were delegates of North Carolina at varying times between 1774-1777. The collection spans 1925-1926 and includes two photographic prints and two letter correspondence. The strength of the collection are the photographic prints of two of the three North Carolina Declaration of Independence Signers and biographical notes.

This collection contains the records (1872-2014, undated) for the Cumberland Lodge No. 5, Knights of Pythias, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Types of material included are correspondence, financial records, rosters, visitors' registers, by-laws, deeds, records of proceedings and printed material. Membership information often gives a member's age, dates when each class or rank was attained, date of death and what dues were collected. In some cases indication is also given as to when membership was withdrawn, suspended or reinstated.
This collection (1884, 1908-2005) includes the papers of Helen Keel Peel (who died in 2005 at the age of 88) and her husband James Woolard Peel (who died in 1986), of Everetts in Martin County, North Carolina. This collection contains 8" x 10" photographs taken by Edwin A. Martin when he was a professor in the Philosophy Department at North Carolina State University and Curator of Photography at the North Carolina State University Visual Arts Center in the 1990s. The tobacco images cover a season of tobacco farming in the Wendell, North Carolina, area from planting through auction. The images of Harkers Island, North Carolina, document the daily life of the local fishing population. A 1998 publication Hope for a Good Season containing some of these Harkers Island photographs is also included.
