This collection contains material documenting the life of James Long Newsom, Sr., (1914-2007) of Durham, North Carolina. A graduate of Duke University and Duke University Law School and attended Syracuse University Law School, he began practicing law in Durham in 1938. Correspondence (1931-1940) documents his post-high school education and courtship of his future wife Frances Martin whom he met at Syracuse. As a member of the United States Naval Reserve, he fought in the South Pacific for the years 1942-1945 during World War II and this experience is covered with extensive correspondence, photographs, souvenirs, programs and military newspapers. After the war, he returned to his law practice and continued his Naval Reserve career. Also included are diplomas, certificates, family-related photographs (back to the 1910s), clippings, and genealogy.

October 26, 2005,133 boxes, 55.0 cubic feet; Papers (ca 1908-1987, undated) of Kinston, NC physician and anti-communist lecturer, including correspondence, clippings, photocopies, and printed materials, relating to his collection on the history, membership, and activities of communist, socialist, anti-semitic, and radical organizations and movements, and their opponents in North Carolina, the United States, and internationally, including the Spartacist League, the Communist Party, USA, the John Birch Society, and the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade; transferred from the Hoover Collection on International Communism, 10/26/2005.

Photograph album documents missionaries from Cass Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church of Detroit (Michigan) in China (ca. 1900-1917). Photographs depicting local life and scenery such as street scenes, a Peng (tent cart), street vendors, Chinese Theatre scene, temples, Boxer ruins used as a boarding school and teachers and their students, are accompanied by ephemera such as programs, memorials and prospectuses.

Papers of Henry S. Taylor (1968-1990) documenting the life and literary career of the noted Lincoln, Virginia-born American poet, translator, and educator who taught literature and co-directed the creative writing at American University in Washington, DC, 1973-2003; including edited manuscripts, loose manuscript items transferred from the Stuart Wright Book Collection, printed materials, proofs of published works & oversized materials.

This collection spans W. Keats Sparrow's career at ECU, being comprised of materials from projects to which he contributed, in his roles as English professor, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, and president of Phi Kappa Phi.

Papers (1904-2009) including correspondence, clippings, programs, magazine, photographs, sermons, and ephemera related to the career of Rev. Cuthbert Warner Bates of the North Carolina Methodist Protestant Church Conference.

Papers (1826-1887, undated) including correspondence, journals, leaflets, diaries, verse, printed material, a drawing and miscellany.

Records (1903-1998, undated [Bulk: 1987-1998) of the Robeson House Preservation Association, reflecting their to preserve the historic Robeson – Whichard - Taylor house in Pitt County, North Carolina, including correspondence, reports, photographs, drawings, grant applications, etc.

Papers (1854-1865) of Robert C. Caldwell, a private soldier from Cabarrus County, NC, who served in Company C., 10th Battalion, North Carolina Heavy Artillery during the Civil War.
