"History of the 37th Regiment, U.S. Colored Infantry" written by A. H. Stein (1866)

This collection contains a microfilm copy of the "History of the 37th Regiment, U.S. Colored Infantry" written by A. H. Stein (1866). Significant numbers of North Carolina men from Craven, Jones, Onslow, Beaufort, Carteret, and other nearby counties enlisted in the Union Army at New Bern and were assigned to this regiment. These soldiers were freed men, formerly enslaved, who had fled from the surrounding plantations to New Bern after it was occupied by the Union Army in 1862.

James Lafayette Whitehurst Family Collection

James Lafayette Whitehurst was born on November 5, 1861 in Bethel Township, Pitt County, North Carolina. His family stayed in Pitt County or moved to Martin County, North Carolina. The collection contains a book written by Margaret Ann Whitehurst in 2006 containing blank spaces to fill in births, deaths, and marriages. There are also photos of the Whitehurst family generations 1-6.

William I. Wooten Collection

Copies of letters (1920-1922) written by WIlliam Wooten to his future bride Pattie Bruce Wooten during their two year courtship while he was finishing up medical school and serving a residency at Wilson Sanatorium, Wilson, North Carolina. Later material (1923-1965) documenting their married life includes photographs, memo books, programs, and architectural drawings and blueprints for houses and a bus station (1941) in Greenville, North Carolina.

Log book (December 1, 1851 through November 25, 1853) of the U.S. Brig Annandale of Camden, Maine, kept by first mate (and later captain) S. Pendleton of Isleboro, Maine, during 29 voyages along the east coast of the United States. Information is given on courses, winds, leeway, remarks, latitude, etc., during the voyages, as well as relative information collected when the brig is in harbor between voyages.

A.M. Handley Journal

A journal (1/19 – 6/29/1859) written by Augustus M. Handley, a young British Army officer in the 19th Regiment of Foot, of a voyage from Gravesend, England, to Calcutta, India, aboard the sailing ship H.M.S. Bucton Castle with Captain Moorsom commanding. The journal contains a detailed description of daily life aboard the Bucton Castle, including various personalities on board, daily activities, an explanation of the ship's time-keeping, a drawing of the ship with parts labeled, notes on the how-to of navigation, changing weather conditions, sea conditions, and meetings with the various ships along the way.
