Papers (1790, 1837-1864) consisting of correspondence by John C. Fennell who served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, was stationed at Camp Heath near Scotts Hill on Topsail Sound, and died (1862) during the yellow fever epidemic in Wilmington, North Carolina. Also includes financial papers, poem, and letters of the Cromartie family of Bladen County, N.C.
Photocopies of a diary (May 30-Aug. 7, 1862) kept by Alfred F. Williams of the 1st North Carolina Cavalry during the Civil War covering troop movements, his capture, and his exchange. Also includes a general store account record (1865-1867).
This collection includes digital images of one albumen photograph of Confederate Fort Hatteras and one of Confederate Fort Clark in North Carolina. Based on the progress that had been made on U.S. modifications of the captured forts, the photographs were probably taken between November 1861 and May 1862 by a New Bern photographer.

Frazier of Guilford County, North Carolina, while a member of Company B, the 45th Regiment North Carolina State Troops during the Civil War, post-war correspondence, court records, receipts, and a census of white children between the ages of six and twenty-one years old in District No. 3 in Deep River Township, Guilford County, N.C.

Papers (1861 - 2020, undated) documenting the archaeological excavations of the Confederate defensive fortifications, river obstructions and fish trap on the River Neuse below Kinston, NC, and the Confederate ironclad ram CSS Neuse, relating to Capt. Joseph H. Price, commander of the CSS Neuse, and relating to Lenoir County, N.C., history in general including correspondence, notes, photographic prints and negatives (black and white), and publications.
The Robin Brabham Collection (1862-1866, 1976, undated) consists of materials from several Civil War soldiers adn civilians, including documents relating to Thomas Midgett of Croatan, North Carolina, containing an oath, a parole and safe conduct documents issued by a Union Army officer, in 1862-1864; also documents, 1863-1866, related to several Union Army soldiers, including records of Major N. H. Foster of 1st Battalion, 12th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery; Lt. Col. H. A. Oakman of 30th Regiment U.S. Colored Troops and; also certificates of discharge by reason of death for members of Co. A., 2nd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Artillery.
Papers (2/23/1862 - 12/26/1868) consisting of a pocket notebook belonging to James H. Mills, Sergeant of Company I, 44th Regiment North Carolina Troops, the "Eastern Tigers," a unit recruited in Pitt County, including orders, inventories, muster and supplies lists related to the Civil War and a few post-war account records.

This collection contains a microfilm copy of the "History of the 37th Regiment, U.S. Colored Infantry" written by A. H. Stein (1866). Significant numbers of North Carolina men from Craven, Jones, Onslow, Beaufort, Carteret, and other nearby counties enlisted in the Union Army at New Bern and were assigned to this regiment. These soldiers were freed men, formerly enslaved, who had fled from the surrounding plantations to New Bern after it was occupied by the Union Army in 1862.

Other material concerns the Wharton and Conrad families of Clemmonsville, North Carolina, in Davidson County, who are also related by marriage to the Grimes family.
