Margaret Frances Brake was born October 10, 1935 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina to Robert Earl Brake and Margaret Melissa Burges Brake. She grew up on a farm outside of Rocky Mount and attended East Carolina College, earning her undergraduate degree in 1957 and her Masters in Education in 1961. She taught 6th grade in Newport News, Virginia and Burlington, Greensboro, and Rocky Mount, North Carolina. She retired from teaching in 1993 and moved back home to care for her aging parents. She passed away in Nashville, North Carolina on August 20, 2024.
