Marilyn Sheerer was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and grew up in the nearby town of Port Royal. She earned a bachelor's degree from Bloomsburg State College, a master's degree from Syracuse University, and a Ph.D. from Ohio University. At East Carolina University, Sheerer served as Provost from 2007 until August 2014. For eight years prior to that she served as dean of the College of Education.
